BREAKING NEWS: Molino Train Derailment, Limited Evacuation
January 28, 2014

As many as eight or nine cars of a train have derailed behind the McDavid Sawmill tonight.

At least two tanker car of phosphoric acid are reportedly submerged in a creek with four other tanker cars on top of them. It is unknown if the tanker cars are leaking. Reports from the scene indicate that the bridge and railroad tracks in the area were totally destroyed by the derailment.

It was initially reported that cars containing sulfuric acid and Acetic acid has also derailed, but that has not been confirmed.

A portion Cotton Lake Road and possibly Barth Road are being evacuated as a precaution.

Firefighters from McDavid and Molino are on scene and an Escambia County Fire Rescue Hazmat crew is responding. There are no injuries.

More details soon on NorthEscambia.com.

Because of the plunging temps my guess would be they hit a broken rail. The steel expands and contracts and is vulnerable to hairline fractures that results in compound breaks during extreme cold weather (contraction). Let us hope the cars with chemicals were not breached.

That is a good assumption. Emergency Services are having a rough night.

ok, thanks.
So, 2 derailments in the same spot, 33 years apart.

I was in the Army at Ft. Ord when this happened, so I never knew it happened. Good pictures on the link.

Dayum!! What did the derailment feel like in the locomotive?  Did the locomotive itself derail? Was there any fire or hazmat leak?

I remember it like it was yesterday . . . . still have the local newspaper articles . . . yes an airstrike was considered because there was no way to get cooling water to the burning LP tanks . . . ended up calling Red Adair out of Texas (oil field guy) to come over and shoot all of the tanks simultaneously.

I've heard a lot of stories about Red from someone who trained us when I was on a Mill Volunteer Fire and Rescue Team. Wow!

I agree . . . during my career on the RR, I had many 'incidents', however, this is one of the more dramatic.  There was a NTSB investigation and their determination was that a "washout" was caused by beavers tunneling under the roadbed in the curve making it unstable.  It was 1:21 AM, drizzling rain and I was running about 47 MPH with around 9000 tons of train when I first saw the washout.  Too late to "prevent" it so my only option was to not over react and hoped we could get over the washout through sheer forward momentum (which we did).  I had five locomotives and the 1st or lead unit and the 2nd unit remained on the rail but the 3rd was listed over, the 4th was on its side, and the 5th upside down on the embankment.  We could hear a very loud sound of pressurized gas escaping and knew immediately that it had to be one of the 6 loaded LP gas tanks had ruptured.  My brakeman cut the lead unit away and we pulled away to a safe distance and it exploded about ten minutes later with a mushroom explosion like I hope to God I never again witness.  I notified the Disp. to begin an evacuation immediately.  It was chaos my friend.
