Charles Elachi, director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., met with top executives of the Norwegian-based oil and gas company, Statoil, on Friday, Nov. 22, in a ceremonial signing of a new agreement to assist in the development and subsequent transfer of technologies to Statoil and America's oil and gas activities. The focus will be on enabling safe and efficient development and production of U.S. and world fossil fuel reserves.

Technologies developed by JPL for the harsh and difficult environments of space will be applied to the demanding environments of oil and gas production. The agreement also provides an opportunity for JPL to benefit from synergistic technology currently being developed in the oil and gas sector that might be used for space exploration.

Statoil has large holdings in the U.S., in such challenging environments as offshore and tight shale formations. It is number 39 on the Forbes 500 list of the world's largest companies.

Now I don't like it for a different reason. Im not happy they are transferring our technologies out. Obama has been transferring our technologies out of the country since he took office, must be another spread the wealth program.

I wonder why statoil?

What are you blaming Obama for now, Chrissy?

Many energy companies are internationally based, yet work inside the U.S. Just like many U.S. energy companies work internationally. Nothing new or strange about this. It happens like this all the time.

U.S. energy companies invented all of the means to extract oil and gas from shale formations. The rest of the world is scrambling to try and do what we have done. They may or may not succeed like we have. One of the advantages the U.S. has is different incentives not found world-wide. Our energy companies are privately owned, as are rights to minerals.

Private ownership of minerals and privately-owned energy companies spurs development of the resource in ways that cannot be repeated where the government owns the minerals and the entities extracting the oil. Mexico's oil industry is crashing because PEMEX is owned and operated by the Mexican government. Mexico also has sizeable shale oil and gas reserves, and they are in a quandary concerning how to extract the resource. The Mexican government knows the only way it will happen is to open the door to investment by U.S. private energy companies.

U.S. oil production has increased every year Obama has been in office, and will continue to grow during his remaining three years. He isn't going to do anything to stifle the ongoing Shale Revolution as it unfolds.

Do you not read the article or even the thread before ranting?

My beef is with the transfer of our SPACE technologies. I could list several instances other than all the obvious NASA ones where he is allowing our national treasure in the form of advancement to be given away.

Yep, those dastardly international oil companies might use space technology to create a super-weapon that can be used against us....

hmmmmmmmm oil companies, many are Islamic. You might have a good point about what you just said lol

Yes, the oil companies want to destroy the biggest consumer of their product.

Makes sense.

Prove that I lie, Dilbert. Maybe you don't know how to read graphs.

FT, guess what? NASA is helping BIG OIL and gas companies Graph10

In fact, in November of 2013, U.S. oil production was at a 24-year high, while imports were at a 17 year low:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/11/13/us-oil-production-exceeds-imports/3518245/

The U.S. will at least temporarily (for a few years) surpass Saudi Arabia as the world's top oil producer by 2016:

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2013/11/12/uk-iea-outlook-idUKBRE9AB0EE20131112

The increased oil production isn't coming from the Gulf of Mexico, its coming from shale formations on land in the in the Lower 48. It started in North Dakota, then spread to Texas, Ohio, Wyoming, and hopefully soon, California. And, we are extracting gas like mad from those and other shale formations. And, Obama isn't standing in the way of any of it, so far.

That is correct. it is coming from PRIVATE land mostly.

I wouldn't dare argue that Obama should have been a texas oil guru when it comes to this. LOL however that doesn't exactly fall into place for the liberals who put him in office hehe

and I still disagree with the sharing of our space technology

however this post was directed to FT who was just the other day bitchin about taxes for big oil and here ya go, it doesn't get any better than having NASA give you all those little secrets and technologies to save BILLIONS/TRILLIONS on getting it out of the ground. I wonder who else will be willing to pay for those secrets.

We're accustomed to your lies and it has been demonstrated to you, numerous times, that the increase of our gas and oil production is from STATE and PRIVATE LAND, NOT FEDERAL LAND.

You keep demonstrating how little you know about energy every time you tap your keyboard on the subject. Throw Chrissy and Pacedog in there with you.

Exactly which oil fields are currently being underproduced because the Federal government won't lease mineral rights to energy companies? What states are they located in? Which oil companies are currently complaining about this? How come this is not being written about in professional journals, like the Oil & Gas Journal (which I subscribe to), instead of the low-rent conservative "news" sources you all cite from?

In fact, so much leasing of prime federal land to energy companies is happening in California that is has some environmentalists up in arms.

President Obama has done nothing to stand in the way of energy development since assuming office. I know it's a bitch for you guys to have to swallow this, but too bad for you....

EXCUSE ME. I said you were correct that he was not standing in the way. do you not comprehend me when I reply back to you? Im actually MOCKING FT with that very thing with this post all together, but im sure that point never entered your mind... LOL

Now are you trying to DENY that the increase in drilling is because of the increase of drilling on PRIVATE land? I know you wouldn't do that. you're pretty savvy on this topic.

Now are you trying to DENY that the increase in drilling is because of the increase of drilling on PRIVATE land?

First you must prove to me that the government has stopped leasing federal lands to energy companies, which neither you nor Markle can do.

Just because famous wingnuts like Charles Krauthammer parrot this shit in misguided opinion pieces--that are gobbled-up by gullible followers--doesn't make it true.

BLM is leasing thousands of Federal acres for energy development, in several states.

There is no dispute that natural gas production on private lands has increased. Adam Sieminski, head of the U.S. Energy Information Administration, told a congressional subcommittee in August that it went up "by 16.4 billion cubic feet per day" from fiscal year 2005 to fiscal year 2011, which ended September 30, 2011 -- a period that includes parts of the administrations of both President George W. Bush and Obama.

Overall, the percentage of U.S.-produced natural gas from federal lands -- relative to that produced from private ones -- fell significantly over the past eight years, from 35% to 21%, reported Sieminski.

It then directs readers to a chart on the federal Bureau of Land Management's website.

This chart does show that fewer leases have been granted under the first three years of Obama's administration
http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/04/politics/fact-check-oil-gas/index.html

well there you have it, right from a bias CNN lol funny thing is, they blamed bush for the cause of this. so are you going to give bush credit for causing this? lmao

yes youre amusing me as well. im surprised at your lack of knowledge in this area. although I doubt its lack of knowledge just that you want to believe a lie.

your links only proved they are making leases, something I never denied.

fact is, in 2013 they sure as hell did not make up for the 42% reductions in leases held created from the previous 3 years lol

and that data your trying to deny which is a sum total went all the way through dec 2012. 2013 aint over yet buddy so its the most accurate data.

deal with it and duh back at ya LOL

NASA is one of the very few, if not the only, government agency which has returned at least $7.00 to our economy for every tax payer dollar spent.  Since beginning, thousands of inventions and developments from NASA have made their way to the commercial market and our economy.

In recent years, wind tunnel tests and work within NASA has been picked up by the trucking industry.  Changes in the design of the tractors and trailers have saved billions of gallons of diesel fuel.

So what did the administration of President Barack Hussein Obama do?  Why cut NASA's budget and relegate them to doing research for Global Warming AND outreach for Muslims.  Gosh, why in the world is our economy in free fall with such great economic decisions?

Sorry you lose again. My response was to a post describing technology developed by NASA which is what my post addressed along with the current failure of NASA and this administration.

Keep up the good work.
