Remember when kids would say to the teacher: "How can I look the word up in the dictionary if I don't know how to spell it?"

Along those lines, how do you learn the name of something when you don't know what it's called? For example what is the name of the part of a doorknob set up that goes into the strike plate? I don't mean a dead bolt but just the tapered THING that retracts when you turn the knob.
