Dear (redacted),
The 23-year-old man arrested for killing a TSA official at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday was carrying a one-page "manifesto" that referred to the "New World Order," the Federal Reserve and "fiat currency," according to our sources.
The language and references appear to put the suspect, Paul Ciancia, squarely in the conspiracy-minded world of the antigovernment "Patriot" and militia movement. The attack comes at a time, as we've documented, that this far-right extremist movement has been growing by leaps and bounds – from some 149 groups in 2008 to 1,360 last year. It's partly a reaction to our nation's first African-American president and our country's changing demographics.
Please take a moment to read our exclusive analysis of the extremism that may prove to be linked to Ciancia's motives.
In recent months, we've urged the federal government to devote more resources to combating potential domestic terrorists. And, with your help, we'll continue tracking this dangerous movement and providing law enforcement with vital intelligence and training.
Sincerely,
