So why do we need a monstrous army and navy?

Personally, the military isn't large enough. We should fire most of the civilians that work in DoD and leave the troops alone.

Pacedog, you're starting to respond like Markle. I wasn't advocating for NO military, just a much smaller force.
And how about closing ALL our overseas bases? We have rockets and aircraft and ships.

Do you really think we need and can afford more than 900 bases overseas?

Face it, I'm right on this -- we don't need F35s, more aircraft carriers, tanks, or artillery.

While you and your contemporaries no doubt feel we need to look powerful and dangerous to the rest of the world, the facts are, our failures in the field in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam prove to the whole world that with all our money, we don't know how to win foreign wars that we seem to like to start.

You'd think we'd learn something from the waste of all that blood and money.
