Come down and watch if you get a chance. It is free and the Handcycle guys are amazing.
The fourth annual Subway Pensacola Cycling Classic is Saturday and Sunday, bringing a field of professional cyclists into the area.
Keeping the same format, there will be three stages for the event. Admission is free for each stage.
The first stage of the Subway Pensacola Cycling Classic will be a road race Saturday morning on the Blackwater River State Forest Trail, located north of Milton. Later Saturday afternoon, a time trial race will be held on Pensacola Beach in the area beyond Portofino toward the Gulf Islands National Seashore entrance.
On Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., it's the Criterium in downtown Pensacola, a high speed course where cyclists circle the streets for a certain number of laps.
Regional pros and top amateur cyclists will be racing n this three-stage event for $21,000 in prize money. The Pensacola Cycling Classic, presented by Anderson Subaru, is under USA Cycling permit so valuable points are also on the line.
There are many categories competing including the top levels of Pro/1/2’s, the “beginner” Category 5, Juniors, Women, Cat. 3/4, Masters 30+/40+ and Masters 50+/60+.
Handcycles, including members of the Paralyzed Veterans of America Racing Team will also be competing! The Paralyzed Veterans of America is the designated charity for this year's event.
There will also be a free Kids Fun Race (10 & under) at the Criterium Sunday morning 9:15am in downtown Pensacola. Each child participating will receive a raffle to win a nice new bike! Make sure you and your child (with bike and helmet) are at Government & Jefferson St. by 9am to sign up.
The distance will only be one lap (approx. ¾ mile). Gold, Silver & Bronze medals will be awarded too.
