In 1977 we undertook to give $5 billion in annual foreign aid to Israel and Egypt. After 35 years, how long should the United States, whose middle class has not seen a rise in real income since 1977, borrow from China to pay Egyptians and Israelis $5 billion a year not to fight each other?

Through a mindless adherence to policies that date to a long-dead past, America is forfeiting her future.

I agree with everything he said in that. But he left out the most significant part of all.
Foreign policy no longer has any influence on the military budget. The military is now just another giant "job and profit creator". So even though it's all true, none of what Buchanan pointed out makes any difference.

A key part of the job description of "congressman" now is to be a lobbyist for the military budget. Be it the money spent to maintain profits and jobs in his district or the money spent to maintain overseas spending, because the same people who profit from that, finance his re-election campaign.
It's all money and jobs now. All other considerations take a backseat to it.

Well said, Bob, to be elected to Congress is the equivalent of winning the National Lottery.
