The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that, on Thursday night, because of a report that someone was firing gunshots in the air. (If you’re a Vegas resident, and are curious, this took place near Lake Mead Boulevard and Torrey Pines Drive.) The police eventually found the shooter, but not the gun.
In their desperation to find this lone gun (which might, for all the police knew, have been a perfectly legal gun), police immediately obtained a search warrant. This wasn’t just an ordinary search warrant, allowing them to search the suspect’s property. Instead, it put the entire neighborhood on lockdown. Police eventually took into custody seven people who lived in the home from which the shots were fire. A SWAT team then cleared the area and the police searched the home.
