I looked up the origin of the term "indian giver" one time.
And discovered that it actually arose from a misunderstanding coming from cultural differences.
When the indians presented gifts to the white men, the indians thought they were bartering for something they would receive in return.  That's how their culture worked.
But the white men didn't understand that and perceived it to be an outright gift and didn't reciprocate.  That's when the indians wanted their barter back and the white men didn't understand what was happening.  As a result of that the white men coined the term "indian giver" as being someone who gives a gift and then later wants the gift back.
