The Ohio Department of Insurance predicts premiums in 2014 will rise by 88 percent, a direct result of President Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
The average cost of insurance premiums will stand about $420, “representing an increase of 88 percent” compared to 2013, the department reported, Forbes said.

State officials aren’t surprised. They’ve cautioned about the “rate shock” since the early days of Obamacare, Forbes reported.
“We have warned of these increases,” said Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, in a statement reported by Forbes. “Consumers will have fewer choices and pay much higher premiums for their health insurance starting in 2014.”
Rates in August 2011 for Ohio residents were projected to increase between 55 percent and 85 percent. By March of 2013, those cost hikes had whittled to an 81 percent prediction.
“A total of 14 companies proposed rates for 214 plans to the Department [of Insurance] Projected costs from the companies for providing covered for the required — by Obamacare — essential health benefits ranged from $282.51 to $577.40 for individual health insurance plans,” Ms. Taylor’s statement read, Forbes reported.
The Department of Insurance still has to approve the proposed rate hike, Forbes said.

(from 1987):

The Washington Times, the right-wing daily that bills itself as an alternative to the Washington Post, is owned and influenced by Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church. But most journalists seem unable or unwilling to consider the political implications of this fact -- despite the role of Washington Times executives in the Koreagate scandal of the 1970s and the Iran-contra scandal today.
Since its inception in 1982, the Washington Times has gained a circulation of about 100,000 and the endorsement of President Ronald Reagan, who reads it every day. Founding editor and publisher James Whelan resigned in July 1984, charging that top Unification Church (UC) officials had taken over the paper in violation of UC guarantees of independence. In 1987, Times editorial page editor William Cheshire and several staff members also resigned over UC interference.
The Washington Times public relations line -- printed as fact in a Time magazine profile (6/15/87) -- maintains that the newspaper is "owned by a group of Korean investors affiliated with the Unification Church." These "investors" -- the Korean-based Tong-II Industries -- do not seem to view the Times as a profit-making venture. Current Times editor-in-chief Arnaud de Borchgrave told the Washington Post (5/6/87) that a Tong-II executive described one of the company's factories as "the logistical tail of the Washington Times." "They are very conscious of the fact that a certain portion of their profit comes to us to meet the subsidy," de Borchgrave said.
A 1978 congressional committee disclosed that 53 percent of Tong-II was owned by the Unification Church. But there is no proof that Tong-II is the sole, or even the principal, funder of the Times. New World Communications (NWC), the privately held parent company of the Washington Times and other Moon media outlets, is neither obligated under the law nor willing to disclose its financing.
Three NWC executives are not only top Unification Church officials, but have also had high-ranking posts in the Korean CIA (KCIA). Sang Kook Han, a "personal assistant" to the KCIA director in the early 1960s, later served as South Korea's ambassador to Norway and Panama. In 1984, Han was installed at the Washington Times, precipitating the resignation of editor James Whelan. Currently senior vice president of New World Communications, Han is described by Whelan as the "de facto publisher" and "inspector general" of the Times.
Kim Sang In, another NWC executive, was KCIA station chief in Mexico in the '70s. There, according to U.S. congressional investigators, he functioned as the "control agent" for Tungsun Park, who bribed U.S. officials to gain favors for the South Korean government in what became known as "Koreagate." Congressional probers disclosed that illegal espionage operations linked to Koreagate were carried out by the Unification Church at the behest of the KCIA.
Bo Hi Pak, the president of NWC, served as liaison to the U.S. intelligence community while posted in Washington as South Korean military attache in the 1960s and early '70s, according to the Koreagate inquiry. Pak is also president of CAUSA (Confederation of the Associations for Unity of the Societies of the Americas), the political arm of the Unification Church. CAUSA was instrumental in providing aid to the Nicaraguan contras.
What are the intentions of those who own and control the Washington Times? The Koreagate probe revealed that the Moon organization functions as a highly integrated unit; each component may maintain the appearance of independence as a means towards larger ends. James Whelan believes he was forced out of the paper because he was too independent.
Opposition to constitutional democracy is a theological premise of The Divine Principle, the basic text of Unificationism. Moon's speeches are riddled with contempt for "American-style democracy," which he denigrates as "a good nursery for the growth of Communism." "We must have an automatic theocracy to rule the world," Moon has declared.
Former top UC official Steve Hassan believes that the Washington Times is a "Trojan horse" within the conservative movement. Hassan told EXTRA!, "Conservative politics is glad to have a voice through the Times, but ultimately it has nothing to do with conservatism. It has to do with fascism."

Yep, so right, Tex,

Most people that have any sort of intelligence know that the Washington Times is the Fox News of the Newspapers.

The truth rates will go up.....but the safety net is the cap on Administrative costs.......they all will be playing paper games to maximize their profit.....Maybe by 2014 we can get an Attorney General who actually will prosecute white collar fraud when it is discovered that a lot of these plans are closed, and cannot add new members, and they will try to shift to their general health care plans and then show paper losses which they will argue now must be covered by other plans in their company. There is not going to be a huge preexisting condition issue with people who have been employed for years with employers and who have conditions. This stays the same.....where they are going to get clever is in the accounting......there should be an entire group in the AG office to catch the crooks. It is important to have that unit formed, and notify all health insurance companies the parameters of fraud under the ACA.

However, without a new AG......the consumers of health care insurance products, and existing plans are going to see creative cost shifting.

Well not endorsing obamacare, but Ohio currently has and almost always has had the one of the lowest rates in the country. Some people will want to move to Ohio after Florida, California, Texas release their rates.

Well existing plans written after 3/23/2010 will be gone on the anniversary date in 2014. Grandfathered plans written before that time cannot change the terms. Plans will only close if approved by the Federal government in conjunction with respective states office of insurance regulation. If a person is in a large group and that employer has changed the plan since March 2010 it will have to be changed on the anniversary date in 2014. So when Obama said you could keep your plan (somewhat true) if you were on the same plan before he signed it into law.

Under 50 employee groups expected to practically disappear by mid 2015.

You need to thank your employer for having insurance out of Alabama their group rates haven't even come close to Florida's. The renewals coming in now for September are averaging around a 35% rate increase. But all joking aside here when it becomes more affordable for your employer to pay the penalty that cover you, what do you think they are going to do? That will happen down the road. Beside's some of those new individual aca plans are loaded with more benefits than group plans. But then again they will be in the range of $14,000 a year for a single person. But maybe you'll be on Medicare by then.

There's no free lunch. Even after obamacare proves untenable people will believe even more govt control is a solution.

The direction of our healthcare system has has had little to do with free market for a long time. Each crisis and solution and program has furthered govt involvement and will lead to it's ultimate complete control. It's heading a direction.

I wouldn't start in the insurance biz today... infact I got out of the med biz as quickly as I could.

I have Alabama State Employees health insurance(BCBS of Alabama) although I do not work for the state. Unless the whole State of Alabama is going to pay the penalty for their employees I won't have to worry. I have a good ways to go before I'm on medicare.
