There are many lies surrounding America's aggressive colonial wars: We've now had a second president to declare the Iraq war over -- while 50,000 troops remain "in theater" and whole armies are there "over the horizon." And, of course, there are the declarations that these American mercenaries of empire are "all heroes." Repeating it (ad nauseum) in the media and in the political arena doesn't make it any more true (or any less absurd).

I can only guess you are talking about military members. This is not true. there are hero's even in peace time. On my first ship, USS TEXAS (CGN 39) we were pulling into our homeport of San Diego a line parted and it cut the leg off of a young BM3. Many scattered but BMCS Carter took charge. He got a belt from one sailor for a turnoquit and sent another to medical to get the doctor. His actions saved this young BM3's life. On that day, BMCS Carter was a hero.

you know who a hero is, he's the guy who jumped down on the subway tracks and covered the person who fell, the regular person who runs into a burning house to rescue the occupants, the person who goes out of the way to help a complete stranger without getting paid for it. I'm a vet who got paid to do a job, ask any vet, they will tell you that they are not hero's, they were just doing their job.

I came on this morning and you were on this subject. Tonight you are still on it. You're belaboring the topic, don't you think?
I agree that being in the service does not make you a hero. Americans overuse that term big time. But when you say no member of the US armed forces has been a hero, you're just wrong about that. I'm guessing you aren't including the WWII vets in your accusation. I hope not anyway.
When a soldier risks his life for his brothers-in-arms, when he does something that is extremely likely to get him killed to save somebody else, that's heroism. I don't care if he's being paid for it or not. It doesn't matter if it is a righteous war or not. Our enemies have had heroes in their ranks too. What matters is a willingness to sacrifice, to give it all up for somebody else.
You may not choose to give the utmost respect and call those guys heroes, or women heroes, but I do.

While we are at it, how about the guy who told on his fellow servicemen at My Lai? You don't even include him in a list of heroes?

Well if you start the house afire and then save the residents you ain't much of a hero.

The guys in the trenches didn't set the house on fire. You just posted a thread about a German pilot who risked his life to save an American bomber and the crew aboard. The German government set the fires of WWII. Does that mean the German pilot was not a hero?
That is where your logic goes wrong.
You refuse to distinguish between the acts of individual soldiers and the acts of their government. If you want to say no one should ever agree to be a soldier, just say it. Then who would be there if we were attacked to rightfully defend us?

You became my hero for saying that. But you were already my hero for living in Rio de Janeiro and posting on the forum.
Do you understand the significance of that? WEAR has no input from Rio. The PNJ gives us no input from Rio. Rick's Blog doesn't give it to us.
In fact, fox news or cnn or msnbc doesn't provide that for us.
Only you, friend.

Mai Lai Heroes

Later of course the American public and the world was to learn that just as the villains of Mai Lai were American soldiers, so too the heroes of Mai Lai were also American Soldiers. Hugh Thompson, Army helicopter pilot, with his door-gunner Lawrence Colburn and crew chief Glenn Andreotta came upon U.S. ground troops killing Vietnamese civilians in and around the village of My Lai. According to Chief My Lai prosecutor William Eckhardt, “When Thompson realized what was happening he put his helicopter down, put his guns on Americans, and said he would shoot them if they shot another Vietnamese.”. Both the American public and Vietnam veterans owe a debt of gratitude to these heroes of Mai Lai.

Another man turns against his comrades and becomes a hero to his enemy....

cost of being an American Hero....

When news of the massacre publicly broke, Thompson repeated his account to then-Colonel William Wilson [15] and then-Lieutenant General William Peers during their official Pentagon investigations.[16] In late 1969, Thompson was summoned to Washington DC and appeared before a special closed hearing of the House Armed Services Committee. There, he was sharply criticized by Congressmen, in particular Chairman Mendel Rivers (D-S.C.), who were anxious to play down allegations of a massacre by American troops.[17] Rivers publicly stated that he felt Thompson was the only soldier at My Lai who should be punished (for turning his weapons on fellow American troops) and unsuccessfully attempted to have him court-martialed.[1] As word of his actions became publicly known, Thompson started receiving hate mail, death threats and mutilated animals on his doorstep.[

You said there weren't any American heroes, then you posted the cost of being one.

There you go.
