Gate to hell found

A “gate to hell” has emerged from ruins in southwestern Turkey, Italian archaeologists have announced.

Known as Pluto's Gate -- Ploutonion in Greek, Plutonium in Latin -- the cave was celebrated as the portal to the underworld in Greco-Roman mythology and tradition.

Historic sources located the site in the ancient Phrygian city of Hierapolis, now called Pamukkale, and described the opening as filled with lethal mephitic vapors.

Depends how we define "hell". There are actual real "hells" on earth that make anything written up in that book (or any other book) just a childish fairy tale in comparison. But I don't know if any of those "hells" have gates. I wouldn't think so.

If you read the article, it sounds as if the inhabitants back then thought this was the gate to hell, even though they didn't phrase it as such.

During rituals, the priests used to throw live animals into the cave, then they would send a human being who was aware he needed to hold his breath into the cave to bring out the dead animal.

In other words, every animal that was ever thrown into this cave died from the fumes.

Good point. I hadn't thought of that.
Probably a wiser decision would be to go to the David's Catfish House in Atmore instead. Most of those people living behind the gate of hell (in Milton) don't even know that his catfish house in Atmore was there long before the one in hell.
Before they remodeled the Atmore one to look like the one in hell, that was one of the coolest old timey small southern restaurants in our area. Had more of a Jerry's Drive-In feel to it in the beginning.
