I explained to my wife.....if the dogs go onto the river ice.....you do not follow or jump in to save them. I have drilled this into her head, and I tried this winter to keep them off the ice which they were not used to........they like swimming in open water, and they do not understand the ice, but I knew someone who died falling through the ice, and it has left a lasting impression. I will also not run after my dog into traffic.....but you need to think about these things because you love your animals......I just cannot imagine how this accident happened.
