A series of explosions in the skies of Russia’s Urals region, reportedly caused by a meteorite shower, has sparked panic in three major cities. Witnesses said that houses shuddered, windows were blown out and cellphones have stopped working.

According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers.

A bright flash was seen in the Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Sverdlovsk regions, Russia’s Republic of Bashkiria and in northern Kazakhstan.

Lifenews tabloid said that at least one piece of the fallen object caused damage on the ground in Chelyabinsk. According to preliminary reports, it crashed into a wall near a zinc factory, disrupting the city's Internet and mobile service.

This story promises some weird theories because a meteor traveling at many thousands of miles an hour is going to see a guided missile as an old man crossing the street...I don't think any fire control system could calculate the range rate of a meteor and plot an intercept point that fast,,,and a missile trying to run it down would be a joke...

Well, they had to try something.

It would all depend on the path it took..

some damn BIG explosions...

At least we were not at the brink of nuclear war and the Russians have a missile defense recognition system that is worth a damn. Can you imagine if they thought this was an attack by the United States? None of our posts would have ever been made tonight.

there was a meteor that was supposed to NOT hit earth last night that was passing. it was the closest one we have ever known of. I dont know yet, but I bet it was that one. they may not even tell us if it was. but I think people got hurt.

Fascinating.

Experts are saying that judging from the time and direction, it's highly unlikely that this was connected to the larger meteor Chrissy referenced.

Reports of several hundred people injured from flying glass from the shock wave.

I've seen no reports that there were missiles involved.

Here's some good links;

33,000 mph... whoa. I think most of them blow up naturally before they actually hit the earth. It's a lot of friction.

I see that they are saying that now. and Im not sure I buy this. They could be covering thier asses for a mis calculation. that or we are in a asteroid belt and no one is saying anything. the conincidence is very strong and this was no small meteor.

I have not seen anything where it says russia shot it down btw lol

i did see where it was up to 950 injured people. some critical

Unless the Russkies have technology we haven't developed yet. You never know what our old enemy might be working on.

I learned something new reading about this.

If it weren't for Jupiter, we'd be in the path of A LOT more meteors.

Turns out that Jupiter and her enormous gravitational force either blocks or deflects many meteors that would otherwise be headed our way.

Thanks, Jupiter!

The bolide which landed on Russia is not related to the asteroid.
Of all the ones we've known about in advance, this asteroid making the flyby today is the largest space object that has ever made this close a miss.
It will be getting as close to earth as some of satellites in orbit. And because of this there is a slight chance that it could collide with one or more of those satellites. If that happens it could disrupt some communications.

thats what they are saying.

However, if they couldnt predict this one, whats to say they are so great about this one?

This one will be in the gravitational pull of the earth. There was one the size of this one that hit siberia in 1908, it was pretty devisating.

In about an hour it will be at its closest poiint. That is if it really wasnt this one that hit.

It's estimated that we only know the locations and trajectories of 1% of asteroids the size of DA14 and larger whizzing around out there.

Probably a good time to slash NASA's funding.

lol

It will get it's closest to Earth at 1:25 our time (about 25 minutes from now).
I'm not taking any chances so at 1:20 I'm going to get in the bathtub with a mattress on top of me.

Strike that. I forgot to clean the bathtub. That thing's nasty.

Think about this. The experts ARE NOT telling is IT WILL NOT hit the Earth.
They're saying there's a 1 in 1200 chance that it WILL hit the Earth.

The thing is we've all bought plenty of lottery tickets with a helluva lot greater odds than that.

Just sayin.

"Russian missiles blast meteor to bits"

I'm not so sure about Russia's claim to have hit the meteor with a missile.
There should have been two vapor trails if a missile was used. I think Russia's trying to convince the world they have the capability to shoot down any incoming missile or bomb.

They didnt shoot that thing down. The russians like to say crazy things, they also claimed to be able to make people zombies not long ago.

here's a ligitimate comment about this.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said the incident showed the need for leading world powers to develop a system to intercept objects falling from space.

"At the moment, neither we nor the Americans have such technologies" to shoot down meteors or asteroids, he said, according to the Interfax news agency

Are you serious here, Teo? I ask because there was a big boom here in our neighborhood two days ago as well. It was around, say, 1400 in the afternoon.

It didn't sound like a typical sonic boom. It sounded more like an explosion.

Anybody else hear this two days ago?

EDIT: It would have been three days ago now.
