As the debate around tax reform grows more heated, broker-dealers and other companies that service retirement plans offered by employers are increasingly concerned that the tax benefits of 401(k) plans are on the chopping block.

An industry group that normally works behind the scenes, the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries, on Monday launched a media campaign intended to educate U.S. employers and workers that the federal government might consider changing the tax benefits of retirement savings accounts.

That worries the ASPPA because Americans might end up saving less, and some smaller employers might eventually decide to discontinue their own 401(k) plans.

The "Save My 401(k)" campaign includes a website, Facebook page, Twitter feed, and even an online videogame. The budget is undisclosed but is in the six figures, according to the ASPPA's chief executive, Brian Graff.

The goal of the media campaign, said Graff, is to raise awareness among employers and employees that they may be in danger of losing some of the tax breaks surrounding their 401(k) plans.

The ASPPA has 11,000 member companies including broker-dealers and record keepers who service the retirement savings plans offered by U.S. employers.

In the wake of the November U.S. elections, the federal government is mulling a possible increase in taxes as a means of reducing the federal budget deficit.

A full-scale tax reform could cut or limit specific tax breaks as a way of lowering overall tax rates. President Barack Obama has said he will raise taxes for wealthy Americans, and trade groups representing both employers and financial services firms have voiced concerns that the tax benefits of 401(k) plans could be slashed.

"The last time Congress made major changes to the tax code, there was a drop in 401(k) contributions by more than 70 percent," Graff said in an interview.

Under the current system, investors who place money in their 401(k) plans do so on a tax-deferred basis, which means they pay no taxes on that money until they withdraw it from the plan.

At present, employees are allowed to put $17,000 a year into their 401(k) plans. In 2013, that amount is scheduled to increase to $17,500.

ASPPA officials have been in talks with members of Congress about their concerns, but the industry group believes it should now reach out to investors, given the importance of the situation, Graff said.

"Everyone we met with said we had a great story, but they said they had to hear from the constituents."

Through the "Save My 401(k)" campaign, ASPPA members - including large brokerage firms such as UBS, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and LPL Financial - intend to reach out to clients and encourage them to write letters to Congress.

You do realize that you're comparing apples and oranges.

Some of those countries have a mandatory two year service and the pay is like a dollar a day.

However if that's what you want here I'm more than willing to go with it so long as those two years of mandatory service are a requirement for citizenship (even if you were born here) and voting rights.

Pie chart for next 5 years.

It's easy to put all the blame on evil, horrible defense spending but it's health care spending that's going to increase over the next 5 years.

Two years of mandatory military duty would be a good thing. Most people come out of their military service a lot better than when they entered

Very true, Yella.

The problem I have with the constant ridicule of military spending is that one of the main things that the federal government is supposed to do and that only the federal government can do--is to defend the country. The is a lot of waste in the DOD but there are many, many things that should be cut before we start cutting our military too much.

It cannot defend the country when our spending is so out of whack with the mission and scope that it has damaged our economy. No nation can defend itself on the rubble of a wasted economy. History is clear that empires require vibrant economies to sustain the military.....and the Joint Chiefs have made it clear that we need to scale down and focus on sustainable economic growth which is the precursor to the federal government doing the job that they must........however to think paradigms better suited for WWII will protect us from evolving threats and realities....and to attack anybody who suggests otherwise......is a clear path for this great nation to stumble into the waste heap of failed empires.......economy....jobs.....real growth in GDP, and smart cost effective modern deployment of our forces....the challenges are real, but we will get this right.

There can be cuts made in the DOD without sacrificing our security.
The problem is that no politician wants defense related cuts in his/her district.

Didn't you see the chart posted?
We can cut plenty and still be way ahead of our "enemies"..

I already said that we can cut defense. Did you see the pie chart for 2012-2017? It's health care spending that's projected to increase, not defense spending. While I am in favor of sustaining Medicare for our elderly, why should providing health insurance for younger Americans be a function of the federal government?

One of the main jobs of the federal government is national security. It's a job that cannot and should not be done by private industry.
And yes, we do have "enemies".

Hon, the problem is NO politician wants spending cuts of any kind in their district. IMHO.

Whereas, we need them all in all programs, in all districts.

Yes, this is so true!

There is no reason to just pick on defense spending. It's health care that's going to be costing the most!

I've said for years that we need to cut across the board. Spending beyond one's budget is only allowed in the government. They can easily print money and most suckers don't realize the impact of that.

It totally sucks.

We need to cut everywhere.

Tax increases from what I hear will only subsidize 8 days of government spending and by most authorities will continue the "recession".

While most of us would pay more taxes, if needed, many of us do not see the need. We see only daily reports of government WASTE.
