Wow. It's the Chinese Jeeps of charity events.

As the East Coast and parts of Ohio struggled to regroup in the devastating wake of “Superstorm” Sandy, the Romney campaign hastily transformed a scheduled victory rally in Dayton, Ohio into a non-political “storm relief event” on Tuesday. According to BuzzFeed, the campaign encouraged supporters to bring hurricane relief supplies and “deliver the bags of canned goods, packages of diapers, and cases of water bottles to the candidate, who would be perched behind a table along with a slew of volunteers and his Ohio right-hand man, Senator Rob Portman.”

Just to be safe, campaign aides reportedly spent $5,000 at a local Wal-Mart on supplies that could be put on display. When supporters arrived at the rally-turned-relief event, they were treated to the 10-minute video about Romney’s life, which was first unveiled at the RNC. The event ended with supporters lined up to hand over supplies and meet Romney. But according to BuzzFeed, this donation process was also staged:

Empty-handed supporters pled for entrance, with one woman asking, “What if we dropped off our donations up front?”

The volunteer gestured toward a pile of groceries conveniently stacked near the candidate. “Just grab something,” he said.

Two teenage boys retrieved a jar of peanut butter each, and got in line. When it was their turn, they handed their “donations” to Romney. He took them, smiled, and offered an earnest “Thank you.”

Meanwhile, poor ole Obama is having to actually do his job for once while losing all of that valuable campaign time. Must be eating eating him up to see Romney widening the gap like that. LOL

Yes, because the optics to this sort of thing are terrible.

I found the perfect word in the comments: SMARMY...if that doesn't just describe the nature of this photo-op, what does? As a former governor, he had to know better, yet he did it anyway.

Sally,

How much did President Obama take out of his pocket for the relief effort?

By the way, how much did you provide for the relief effort?

That was on the way to his fake photo op swimming in the "gulf" with his daughter after the BP spill to prove it was "safe", except they weren't in the Gulf.

I have no idea. He tends not to make political theater out of his charitable giving, unlike some.

I gave $200 to the Red Cross yesterday. I'll probably donate more at a later date. Here's the link;

Thanks in advance for your generosity.

Gawd! Christie needs to get a gastric bypass before he dies of a heart attack. I was impressed w/ what he said though about Obama.

Sally,

While you are pounding yourself on your back you should look at the USA Today headline you posted as one of your examples of a Republican willing to act in a bipartisan manner:
“Election winner gets … a mess
“On the White House welcome mat: the “fiscal cliff,” trouble abroad and a toxic political landscape.”

Thanks for reinforcing what a pitiful “job” your hero BHO has done in four years of campaigning for another term. The Absent President should be carved in stone over his presidential library one day.

Photo-ops, most people see right through them. Voters aren't always stupid.

Then again, we shall see.........

No.

It was a hurricane.

A photo-op is scrubbing already clean pots at a soup kitchen or transforming a campaign rally into a phony "relief event".

Smart people recognize the difference.
