With Sandy about to hit, I was wondering if you felt FEMA should be abolished. Romney said reponsibility should fall on the states because of the economic burden.
My gut reaction is to say it shouldn't be abolished, but I would like to hear what some of you have to say.

if not abolished then overhauled. The original purpose has been twisted to encourage building in high risk areas not discourage it. Originally it was a fund to be used to help in recovery not enable contractors to build new structures in those same areas

With all the incredibly wasteful spending FEMA did after Ivan it sure could use a bunch of cleaning up. Typical federal bureaucracy.

But it takes huge govt agencies to administer enormous govt programs... before central govt protections we just sat and died.

Hey! You stole part of my line, Pkr!

I think it should go away (along w/ a few other "agencies), and we should step into the Wayback Machine and go back to how things used to be. You can't tell me that charities and rich people would not step forward to help take care of folks in absence of FEMA. They would. In fact, I've no doubt they would form some charity especially for Emergency Management, and it would be run 97 times more efficiently than FEMA ever has been.
