Common Cause is gonna try and scare the right wingers...............I guess if we're going to stereotype, they'll put the signs in the white suburbs. Smile

Ohio has recently taken center stage as one of the few remaining swing states. That status brings with it a bitter fight for votes, and in some cases, the potential for voter intimidation.

A series of billboards have gone up in poor, minority neighborhoods in the Cleveland area telling people that voter fraud is a felony. The sponsor of the billboards is unidentified.

"Voter Fraud is a Felony! Up to 3 1/2 YRS and a $10,000 Fine," read the signs.

While voter fraud is indeed a felony, instances of in-person fraud are very rare, and the placement and timing of the billboards has some groups crying foul.

Common Cause, a left-leaning citizen advocacy group, says the billboards are intended to intimidate potential voters and is set to launch a counter billboard campaign.

You're kind of calling your people frauds by that story. If I were a legitimate voter I would not give two squirts about that sign. If I had intentions of deceiving someone at the polls the sign would intimidate me. See?

That's the concern we democrats have actually. That's what this all comes down to. We just want as many legitimate voters to vote without worrying. Not everyone is as set on casting their vote, some may hesitate in what they perceive to be uncomfortable circumstances that's all.

The problem I see with that assertion is that I don't remember liberals or groups like Common Cause being worried about REAL voter intimidation by the Black Panthers, not on a billboard, but right there at the voting place.

Two members of the New Black Panther party stood in front of the entrance to the polling station in uniforms, described as military or paramilitary, pointing billy clubs at voters while shouting racial slurs....such as such as "white devil" and "you're about to be ruled by the black man, cracker."

Of course the Obama administration's Department of Justice was all over that case...they couldn't wait to drop the charges and refuse to prosecute.

Fine example of the hypocracy of this thread Joanie. Thanks.

Maybe calling someone a white devil or cracker is a term of endearment used by liberals? And the Panthers were there to help the white devils and crackers, not intimidate them?

And Eric Holder saw nothing wrong here... did not pursue charges even when they defaulted by not showing up.

Exactly how many sets of standards does it take to be a liberal?

Those two dudes have haunted the fevered imaginations of the wingnuts to an extent to which they could never have dreamed.

Four years later, and the macho-man, gun nuts still can't get their panties unwadded.

Black men in berets!! Oh my!!

Less than a billboard simply stating the law?

The market finally brought down these offensive billboards. The people paying for them would rather take them down than reveal who they are.

Thanks to over 100,000 people including more than 66,000 members of ColorOfChange.org who signed petitions to Clear Channel demanding that they remove these offensive and dangerous billboards and a coordinated efforts by many groups including the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights under Law and Cleveland City Councilwoman Phyllis Cleveland. Members of CREDO Action, SumOfUs.org, SignOn.org, and activists using the Change.org platform also participated.
This is the statement from ColorOfChange Executive Director Rashad Robinson: “We’re pleased that after hearing from more than 100,000 people across the country, Clear Channel has finally decided to stop enabling this attack on Black and Latino voters by an anonymous group. It is telling that the group behind these ads, when given the choice by Clear Channel, wanted to cancel the ads and continue hiding in the shadows rather than publicly stand behind the ads. These billboards are part of a massive right wing effort to suppress the votes of African Americans, Latinos and other people of color for political gain. While we celebrate this victory for voting rights, we are also aware that these same ads are being hosted by another outdoor company, Norton Outdoor in Cincinnati. Norton’s continued refusal to pull down these anonymous voter suppression ads speaks to their values. ColorOfChange members will continue to raise their voices until all ads are removed.”
With more than 800,000 members, ColorOfChange.org is the nation’s largest Black online civil rights organization.

Here's what the replacement billboards are going to look like. This billboard is going up in various cities where the other less encouraging billboards had been. Different companies in different states have all seen the light and are encouraging voters to cast their votes, as is their right and you might say, civic duty.

Now, that's a message I'd like to see all over the place! Good Job!

If you go into a store and there is a sign that says "shoplifters will be prosecuted" does it stop you from shopping there?

GOOD POINT NEKO . . .

I don't know about the shoplifting signs, I've never considered doing that.

The point of course is that the signs were not designed to prevent voter impersonation but to keep people who were legally registered to vote away from the polls.

Any attempt to say otherwise is just a lie.

We must try to think outside our own ethnic and socio-economic references. Most of us posting here are fairly well educated white folks with more than one or two election cycles under our belts. It would take quite a bit to keep any of us away from the polls come election day.

This is not the case with many minority voters. They may not feel comfortable calling the supervisor of elections to ask a question about their registration or voting rights. They may have heard stories of others in their neighborhoods or families who had, shall we say, unpleasant experiences associated with the whole voting process.

In other words their feelings of security surrounding voting may not be as robust as ours. A sign that is less than encouraging may be just enough to keep them away from the polls. I much prefer to see the signs of encouragement saying "voting is a Right, not a Crime" rather than the threatening billboards that have now or will be shortly taken down.
