The Pace district commissioner's re-election campaign is funded more than 80% by builders and developers whose projects will require his approval to commence. What's worse, I think, is that the Florida State Attorney General's office says this fetid practice is legal since there are no laws whatever to prevent any company from contributing to an elected official's re-election fund.
The Florida Commission on ethics says the same thing. Since all campaign contributions are legal, there's nothing to be done.
In other words, our state laws protect immoral, unethical dealing between companies and elected officials.
We need to correct this deplorable situation by getting a law enacted that will make it illegal for companies to donate campaign funds to any elected official whose approval would be needed for them to commence their projects.
Anyone agree? Anyone disagree?
Could it happen? Not likely. Not at a time when most legislators at every level of government depend on the contributions of big companies who expect reciprocity. That's the real swamp in Washington, and in our country.
That's why the oil companies whose product is already destroying our climate continue to fund the re-election campaigns of legislators who are willing to sell their souls -- and our planet -- for big bucks.
It's also why our main NS corridors are badly congested and our schools are forced to beg for impact fees in order to serve our county's growing population of students.
