That's kinda why Iran's having a lot of trouble -- Iranians know how repressive their government is, and they actually want to be friendly with the U.S.   Their government doesn't, though, so you get a lot of protesting that's eventually going to wear the Iranian government down.

I have an idea that Iran wants some nukes as a counter to Saudi Arabia in particular as much as their other reasons for wanting them.  I've read at least a couple of articles explaining that (sorry, don't have any links to share on that.  Google is your friend Laughing )

Personally, I really think Iran is a country we might someday actually be friends with again (so long as we don't insist on their govt being our puppet)    I'm sure the Saudis wouldn't like that one bit though.

Personal anecdote:  My brother, a Nuclear Engineer currently with TVA, had an Iranian roommate at Miss State back in the late 70's.   He went back home after he graduated ... I always imagine he's working on the Iranian nuke program today.  Probably is.

I am afraid my highest hopes for a Korean withdrawal by America has been shattered......Pompeo is saying the North Koreans are not complying.....but but but but but....Donald said our world is safer now. When will he be held accountable for his lies?

NO comparison to any administration in the history of this country. NONE! Trump is easily the most dishonorable man to have ever held the office of President of the United States.

All through the early 70s I had classes with Iranians who also would drink and dance on weekends. There is a whole generation of Iranian babyboomers who are very pro west and modernity.

They'll soon be gone and the following generations have only experienced the regimented theocracy.

Ever wondered why obama promoted Egyptian (and other) regime changes, but pretty much ignored Iran's?

North Korea continuing nuclear programme - UN report

North Korea has not stopped its nuclear and missile programmes, violating UN sanctions, a report commissioned by the UN Security Council says.

It also says Pyongyang has resorted to a "massive increase" of illegal ship-to-ship transfers of oil products and has been trying to sell weapons abroad.

The confidential report by a panel of independent experts was submitted to the UN Security Council on Friday.

North Korea has so far not commented on the document's findings.

Last week, US officials said Pyongyang appeared to be building new ballistic missiles despite recent warming ties with US President Donald Trump's administration and pledges to denuclearise.

Unnamed US officials told the Washington Post that spy satellites had spotted continuing activity at a site that has produced ballistic missiles.

President Trump met North Korea's Kim Jong-un in Singapore in June, and the two leaders then pledged to work towards denuclearisation, without specifying exactly what this would look like.

The document was prepared by the experts monitoring the implementation of the UN sanctions against North Korea.

It was seen by several media outlets early on Saturday.

The report said: "[North Korea] has not stopped its nuclear and missile programmes and continued to defy Security Council resolutions through a massive increase in illicit ship-to-ship transfers of petroleum products, as well as through transfers of coal at sea during 2018."
