Despite a social media backlash as ubiquitous as its competitor’s red cans, America’s second leading provider of carbonated sugar water is standing by a new commercial that depicts Kendall Jenner infiltrating a protest in order to give a police officer a can of Pepsi. In a statement to Ad Week, Pepsi Corp. said:

“This is a global ad that reflects people from different walks of life coming together in a spirit of harmony, and we think that’s an important message to convey.”

Pepsi has now pulled the ad.

I watched the ad and thought it was stupid, but I wasn't outraged.

Why all the hubbub?

Apparently some groups/movements (such as Black Lives Matter) felt that the ad trivialized them and their protests, for commercial gain.  Tel's photo-shopped version of the Kent State tragedy being used as a Pepsi commercial is perhaps an overstatement, but gets the point across, in showing another example of an ad's being grossly misplaced.

I can see both sides of this (i.e., am conflicted on it), but it seems Pepsi had no choice but to pull the ad.  What a waste of money and effort on their part! One might posit that the reaction to the ad in some quarters could've/should've been easily predicted by a savvy marketing/advertising group, but that's so easy for us to say now --  Monday a.m. quarterbacking.

This is the way it was done and done right by the real thing in 1971. No wonder it was paid tribute to by the long running TV series Mad Men in it's final scene. As for Pepsi what else could be expected by a company that was  once owned by the obsessed and possessed actress Joani Crawford? Yuck!
