Here's a comment from the article, by Shaun N:
"The election of Trump was and is a monstrous failure of American democracy. To be a successful liberal democracy, a state must have an informed and intelligent public. The US has large parts of the public who simply don't fit that bill. But there is also a lot more going on. The Republican Party itself is simply unfit to govern. It has deliberately played to racism for almost the last 60 years; Trump's innovation in this respect was that he said openly what Republicans were saying with dog whistles. But the party that is unfit to govern -that has no ideas other than deregulation, cut taxes, and make it easier for the rich to get richer (along with massive military spending and no concern with deficits so long as its a Republican running them up) - is now in charge of most of the government and a majority of states. It's no wonder the US is circling the toilet.
I would not exaggerate the extent or nature of Trump's victory. He lost the popular vote by 3 million votes; he won in three states because of 70,000 votes. Yes, the white working class is hurting (not that anyone ever cares about the African American or Hispanic working classes that have been hurting much more, much longer) but the best predictor for voting Trump was whether or not someone believed Obama was a Muslim. The influence of racism is quite apparent in the Trump vote, as it is in every American election. Yes, deal with the economic pain of those getting left behind; that should go without saying, though I note that Obama's efforts to help these people were cynically blocked by the Republicans.
Trump's inability to grasp reality is horrifying. If he is mentally ill, as seems very possible, then he is the most dangerous man in the world. He has enormous power and no relationship with reality to temper that power. He is thin-skinned. His insecurity and self-doubt bleed from him. To compensate, he refuses to admit that he is wrong, refuses to admit that he makes mistakes. He I is profoundly ignorant and has no capacity or interest in actually learning what he doesn't know. Trump is a disaster already and he is just getting started."
