President Donald Trump's travel ban will remain blocked, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday.

The unanimous ruling from a three-judge panel means that citizens of seven majority-Muslim countries will continue to be able to travel to the US, despite Trump's executive order last month.

"On the one hand, the public has a powerful interest in national security and in the ability of an elected president to enact policies," the judges wrote. "And on the other, the public also has an interest in free flow of travel, in avoiding separation of families, and in freedom from discrimination. We need not characterize the public interest more definitely than this... The emergency motion for a stay pending appeal is denied."

It is a significant political setback to Trump's new administration and raises questions about how the courts will view his apparent vision for an expansive use of executive power from the Oval Office on which he is anchoring the early weeks of his presidency.

Yes, and who was  loudly howling about former president Obama's executive orders?

It is not a set back. It was a TRO and the courts have not even heard substantive issues and evidence. However, the President has enormous power in this regard, and I fully expect some of his ban will be reinstated, and some thrown out as it goes through appeals. All that happened was that there was enough concern to temporarily restrain the government from banning certain folks. I do not want judges making executive decisions, but President Trump showed clear discriminatory intent against Muslims which would not even meet the rational basis test, let alone clear and convincing standard where there has not been a correlation with terror attacks which does not seem like this was just somebody reaching in a hat to get some named countries to stop immigration. The idea that President Obama required more intense vetting on those same nations is another animal than banning people.

President Trump is acting like a petulant child. A President does not need to have tantrums over small things.

Other than the silver spoon in his mouth and the 1% chip on his shoulder he was born with small things. Laughing

A court in Hawaii has just decided that this SECOND attempt at a travel ban cannot go into effect. DOA AGAIN! Nice try.

Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.

Because of his many statements during the campaign and even later Trump declared his intent to block Muslims from entering the country. Because of this intent the court in Hawaii ruled this second attempt at blocking people from his list of countries to be unconstitutional even though they were careful this time to remove the word Muslim

Hypocrisy

"We are a nation of immigrants.. but we are a nation of laws"

"Our nation is rightly disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering our country...

Illegal immigrants take jobs from citizens or legal immigrants, they impose burdens on our taxpayers...

That is why we are doubling the number of border guards, deporting more illegal immigrants than ever before, cracking down on illegal hiring, barring benefits to illegal aliens, and we will do more to speed the deportation of illegal immigrants arrest for crimes...

It is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws that has occurred in the last few years.. and we must do more to stop it."

[Standing Ovation]
It's starting to get a little awkward for the identity politics of the left to defend their own history while denigrating Trump's actions.

Bill Clinton.

Bill Clinton.

Link, please. And get over yourself. The man sitting in the Oval Office (his part-time job) is a ticking time bomb. I wonder if you've ever admitted you were wrong. Many people have actually noticed that the orange man isn't living up to his promises...not about the wall...not about the Muslim ban...but about his promises to improve the economy for working people. He's already allowing the dismantling of health care, including Medicare. And he lies...and everyone around him lies.

It's impressive the amount of things that leftists project on their opposition when their dem party ignores its part in forming the KKK... lynching blacks... opposing citizenship for blacks... opposing voting rights for blacks and women... forming planned parenthood to minimize minority and poor births... etc. It's amazing really... even when their entire platform has again been rejected... they still feel entitled and enlightened somehow. It's not normal.

Bill Clinton.

And this has WHAT to do, please, with a ruling regarding halting travel for people doing so LEGITIMATELY, NOT ILLEGALLY ENTERING THE COUNTRY??

Pay attention, for Pete's sake.

And it certainly doesn't help Trump's case that (1) people coming into this nation from the named countries have not been performing terrorist acts here, and (2) there's obviously no emergency or even urgent situation involved.   All, of course, viewed in the light of othershoe's post -- which I would only supplement with a reminder about Giuliani's damning statement that Trump asked him for wording of a Muslim ban that wouldn't be seen as such.  Snakes in the grass, alas.

Watching dems try desperately to disguise their results beneath feeeeel good intent and talkingpoints.

I guess you could call that a success given today's leftist party. But you have to ignore election results.

You must be a fascist at heart. That's why you try to pretend that fascism is "leftist".

A White House Devoid of Integrity

"At the dedication of his Library, President Ronald Reagan, then 80 years old, reflected on the pendulum swings he had seen in his lifetime, such as the rise of big government and totalitarianism. “I also remember a time when America was advised to keep a low profile in the world as if by hunkering down and muzzling her deepest beliefs she might avoid foreign criticism and placate her enemies,” Reagan said.

Just a week into his infant presidency, President Donald Trump issued an executive order that affirmed his deepest beliefs loudly to the world: He will rule an incompetent, huge government dependent on fear-mongering, which (for starters) means banning lawfully admitted immigrants based on their birth nationality. It could mean a wall on our border with Mexico, whether it's a new tax on Americans or diplomatic fallout over who picks up the $40 billion tab. It may mean reversing protections for LGBT government employees.

As we witness daily public panic caused by a White House possessing not enough professionalism and a toxic abundance of narcissism, a crisis of character is quickly becoming a crisis of the American experiment.

Operating in a command climate of Trumpian instability, the most senior and public White House officials are party to profoundly destabilizing acts. The most consistent characteristic of senior officials charged with communicating the goals of the Trump administration has been a flagrant disregard for the truth, though a more charitable interpretation would be that the new policies are so dysfunctional that no one in the administration understands them. Which petrifies you more: willful lying, or gross incompetence?..."
