Her name was Miss Nelson.

I don't recall her first name. She didn't seem to need one.

She taught fifth grade at West Elementary School in Ashtabula, Ohio. In the fall of 1967, my mother dropped me off in her classroom like a failed adoption. My mother would deny that characterization, but we all knew that Miss Nelson had a reputation. She was tall and wide with a voice that carried and a mind inclined to use it. I'd never seen anybody like her.

You know how this story goes. She also had a heart bigger than a Dodge wagon. She hid it well in the first few weeks, but soon enough she was holding after-class sewing sessions for all of us girls. She claimed to be teaching us how to make clothes for our Barbie dolls, but it was just an excuse to gather us round and talk to us about how to be citizens of the world.

She believed diagramming sentences builds character and profanity is the sign of a diminished mind. She hated the word "liar," declaring it the worst thing you could ever say about a person. If he was a liar, there was no hope for him.
All these years later, I'm still so reluctant to use the word. Some people you never stop wanting to avoid disappointing.

I've been thinking of Miss Nelson a lot during the past few days -- since Inauguration Day, to be precise. It hurts to the marrow of my bones to say this, but there's no use in pretending that we don't have a chronic liar in the White House.

On Tuesday, I made a list of newspaper headlines on Donald Trump's continued lie about nonexistent voter fraud.

The New York Times: "Trump Won't Back Down From His Voting Fraud Lie. Here Are the Facts."

The Washington Post: "Citing no new evidence, Trump continues to say there were millions of illegal votes."

The Boston Globe: "White House defends illegal voting claim, without evidence."

Los Angeles Times: "Trump's unproven claims of widespread voter fraud trip up White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer."

Chicago Tribune: "White House doubles down on Trump's claim that millions voted illegally, but provides no evidence."

The Wall Street Journal: "Trump's Claim of Massive Illegal Voting Gets Little Support From GOP Lawmakers."

This is our new reality.

We still have our holdouts. NPR listeners wanted to know why Mary Louise Kelly reported on Trump's many lies but wouldn't call them what they are: lies. On "Morning Edition," Kelly explained that she relies on The Oxford English Dictionary's definition of "lie."

"A false statement made with intent to deceive," Kelly said, "'intent' being the key word there. Without the ability to peer into Donald Trump's head, I can't tell you what his intent was. I can tell you what he said and how that squares -- or doesn't -- with facts."

At what age is adulthood assumed and a person held accountable for his words? Unless he admits he lied, we're supposed to think he's just flirting?
True, I can't peer into the dark recesses of Trump's head -- thank you, Jesus -- but that doesn't mean I can't discern his intentions by the content of his words.

He lies, but he may not mean it? That's like someone hitting me in the head with a baseball bat and then assuring me on the ambulance ride that he didn't mean to make me bleed. At some point, one of us has to state the obvious because the medical staff and the police are definitely going to have their assumptions.

Every time I hear another lie come out of Trump's mouth -- about his inauguration crowd (smaller than Barack Obama's and the Women's March), voter fraud (it didn't exist), the media's accusing him of attacking the intelligence community (he compared them to the Nazis) -- I feel as if I'm back in junior high school trying to break up with the boy my mother warned me wasn't stable.

"You told me you love me."

"I never said that."

"You did. I heard you. Everybody knows it.

"I'm sorry. I never said that."

"We should drink each other's blood."

"I'm going to call Dad now."

Enough of this cat dance around what most of America already knows.
With apologies to Miss Nelson, we in the media must call this what it is: Our president is a chronic and unapologetic liar.

And this is not normal.

President Trump honestly believes that more people voted for him. To say he lies is why mentally insane people lack the capacity to be found guilty of a crime. He is not lying. He actually believes and is delusional. There is a distinct difference.

When did you, or any of the other Progressives here call Petulant former President Obama a liar?

Thanks for posting the piece, FT.  Truer words were never spoken, especially the "not normal" part.  And if Trump is truly so sick he can't see how false his own statements are -- if he's genuinely a sociopath as appears more likely every day -- we're in even bigger trouble than we think.  affraid

The media have exhibited a pathological determination to ignore any possibility of voter fraud, in spite of mountains of evidence to the contrary.
In this week’s headlines, the narrative is repeated over and over again: President Donald Trump is making it all up.

USA Today: “Fact check: Trump claims massive voter fraud; here’s the truth”

Washington Post: “Trump’s imaginary ‘voter fraud’ claims will make it harder for minorities to vote”

New York Times: “Trump’s Voter Fraud Example? A Troubled Tale With Bernhard Langer”

Los Angeles Times: “President Trump’s voter fraud allegation is ‘a lie,’ says California’s top elections officer”

According to the latter article, California Secretary of State Alex Padilla called President Trump a liar.

Breitbart News’ calls to the Secretary of State’s office for a comment were not returned, but that is not surprising. California has intentionally created a recipe for voter fraud on a massive scale.

Here’s the recipe, from an article I wrote in November for PolitiChicks.com:

Treat anyone who proposes a Voter ID bill like [Saul] Alinsky would — shame them, shun them, ridicule, then repeat.

Make access so easy that you can register to vote online up to 15 days prior to Election Day and still vote. (They pushed for same day voter registration so that people who “forgot” to register could still register & “participate” as late as Election Day).

Make a major push to move as many voters as possible to mail-in ballots (permanent absentee ballots).

Spend millions of taxpayer dollars handing out Drivers Licenses to millions of people illegally present in the state (with an asterisk stating, “Federal Limits Apply”).

Pass a law requiring everyone who has a California Drivers License to be “automatically” registered to vote—including illegal aliens.

“If the voter does not check either the “Yes” or “No” box (for whether or not they are US Citizen), and the registration is otherwise complete, the registration should be processed normally and entered on the voter rolls.” (See screenshot of official publication below on California Secretary of State Website regarding CA compliance with National Voting Rights Act (NVRA): http://elections.cdn.sos.ca.gov/nvra/laws-standards/pdf/complete.pdf

Never update statewide voter database with any information that ever disqualif[ies] a voter — especially county coroner lists of the newly deceased.

When you look at what California has done to protect the ruling class of Democrat politicians and powerful public sector unions who represent the legions of bureaucrats, it’s diabolically simple and diabolically clever.

And easy to understand why.

Hundreds of millions in contracts and pay increases for tens of thousands of public sector unions and permanent political careers for politicians are at stake, and as long as the unions keep their cronies in power, the gravy train continues.

All you have to do is follow the money.

They created a system where it was virtually impossible to ever catch anyone cheating, removed all verification processes, automatically register[ed] all drivers license holders — whether they like it or not, and then launch[ed] that program immediately after granting every one of the untold millions of illegal aliens in California a driver[‘s] license.

When the Election Integrity Project brought forth a report on documented voter fraud, the LA Times and other publications slamming Mr. Trump — you guessed it — (yawn) ignored the facts.

California is not an isolated case.

A Breitbart News story from October documents serious, widespread voter fraud involving non-citizen voting in Virginia. Many of the safeguards previously in place have been removed — in large part due to pressure brought by George Soros-backed organizations ostensibly fighting for voter integrity. The only problem is that these Soros-funded groups oppose Voter ID laws and every effective measure to safeguard the integrity of the vote.

A Breitbart News story disclosed that in Virginia, “state officials had used the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements database [SAVE] … to detect and remove aliens from the voting rolls.” And it added: “One of the top priorities of the Soros Advancement Project is to stop the use of SAVE to purge voter lists.”

Last year, in New York City, Alan Schulkin, Commissioner of the Board of Elections, was caught on hidden video by Provject Veritas talking about how Democrats commit voter fraud in New York City.

“Yeah, they should ask for your ID. I think there is a lot of voter fraud,” said Schulkin, who elaborated on the types of voter fraud that are taking place in New York.

Voter fraud has been labeled as a right-wing myth by the left, but Schulkin, a Democrat, confirmed everyone’s worst fears, going against the grain of his own party.

“You know, I don’t think it’s too much to ask somebody to show some kind of an ID … Like I say, people don’t realize, certain neighborhoods in particular they bus people around to vote,” said Schulkin.

According to a Fox News op-ed by John Fund and Hans A. von Spakovsky, President Trump’s investigation of voter fraud is long overdue. The piece documents a complete unwillingness of President Barack Obama’s Department of Justice to take any action. “This refusal to enforce the law came despite a 2012 study from the Pew Center on the States estimating that one out of every eight voter registrations is inaccurate, out-of-date or a duplicate.”

One thing we do know, if President Trump acts, the media will cover it.

And who knows, maybe the guy who defied every prediction, and became the most powerful political leader in the world, will succeed in forcing the media to cover the failings of the very foundation of our Republic — our elections — and build public pressure to fix them.

No,he's a liar, Oatie. When you say you didn't say something that is on tape and still say that you are a liar.

VectorMan, as always, we should not confuse progressives with FACTS.

The only logical explanation for this level of hysteria that I can find is that the fact that he is doing exactly what he promised, at a business man's pace rather than a politicians pace.

What they fear even more than the pace is that they are terrorized that his plans and policies will be immensely successful.  That success will further destroy the already failing Democrat Party putting them out of power for decades.

The hate, vitriol and the level of personal attacks exhibited by the...local posters are surprising.  The sane Democrats I have seen on TV are grudgingly admitting that even they like some of the things President Trump is doing.  THEY seem leery of fussy and whining too much because they see his popularity is steadily improving.  What to do...what to do...other than making childish attacks on poor, poor little ol' me.

Not to worry, I realize none of my Progressive friends will view this and be remembered of all the lies told by former President Obama. Chilling! Little wonder why his legacy lost by a landslide!

Chicken or egg, Seaoat? He has a long history of getting his way, and lying became a tool. There's a video of him speaking about his book...saying "...most people don't have it..." What is "it"? I submit it's a lack of conscience. Don't know whether you had time to watch the documentary...the tenants he tried to evict from the Central Park building he wanted...the scare tactics...the Polish immigrants who slept in the street while working on Trump Tower...the asbestos...the illegal dumping...the lack of safety gear...the mob ties....
