Also according to the report there is possibly an investigation by the FBI into these allegations. In a supreme display of the most egregious irony, FBI Director Comey said he couldn't comment on this in a public forum.

The Russian government was in touch with members of President-elect Donald Trump's political team during the U.S. election campaign and knows most of his entourage, one of Russia's most senior diplomats told the Interfax news agency on Thursday.

Accused by defeated Democratic contender Hillary Clinton of being a puppet of President Vladimir Putin after praising the Russian leader, Trump has dismissed suggestions he had anything to do with the Russian government during the campaign.

But in comments that could prove politically awkward for the president-elect, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said there had indeed been some communications.

"There were contacts," Interfax cited Ryabkov as saying. "We are doing this and have been doing this during the election campaign."

Such contacts would continue, he added, saying the Russian government knew and had been in touch with many of Trump's closest allies. He did not name names.

"Obviously, we know most of the people from his (Trump's)entourage. Those people have always been in the limelight in the United States and have occupied high-ranking positions," he said.

"I cannot say that all of them, but quite a few have been staying in touch with Russian representatives."

Moscow was just beginning to consider how to go about setting up more formal channels to communicate with the future Trump administration, said Ryabkov.

A spokeswoman for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Here's a link to the questioning between Senator Angus King and FBI Director Comey. You can see Senator King's jaw almost dropping in stunned amazement to Comey's answer.

Scroll down a bit to see this clip. It is still on the NBC site.

How on Earth is the current situation possibly involving the Russians having pre-election pow-wows with one candidate in any way similar to this?

The conversation was about NATO missiles in Eastern Europe not about getting someone elected or effecting our election by sewing seeds of doubt.

Maybe Obama's mic went off during the part where he says it's been nice conferring with you during the campaign, is that it?

There's no equivalence, but it's all they've got.

Sad!

These allegations are being investigated apparently at this time. Looks as if the Russian involvement has been going on for a number of years to influence Mr. T. Harry Reid called on the intelligence community last summer to dig into this.

I feel as if we are a day late and a dollar short. Here is some more background on other aspects of the Russian angle in which it is claimed that the Russians are in possession of information re Mr. T's businesses or finances or personal dealings that he would not want to have become general knowledge.

Mr. T has just tweeted in all caps that this story is a witch hunt and fake news.

Surprise. Imagine this will come up in questions from reporters in his scheduled press conference. Will he go through with the conference?

I heard some commentators speculating that Trump was treading on thin ice by publicly disrespecting the (as he would put it) "intelligence" community, that they would not be the ones you wanted to mess with. Maybe this is them, clipping the new guys wings? It could happen.

CNN has reviewed a 35-page compilation of the memos, from which the two-page synopsis was drawn. The memos originated as opposition research, first commissioned by anti-Trump Republicans, and later by Democrats. At this point, CNN is not reporting on details of the memos, as it has not independently corroborated the specific allegations. But, in preparing this story, CNN has spoken to multiple high ranking intelligence, administration, congressional and law enforcement officials, as well as foreign officials and others in the private sector with direct knowledge of the memos.
Some of the memos were circulating as far back as last summer. What has changed since then is that US intelligence agencies have now checked out the former British intelligence operative and his vast network throughout Europe and find him and his sources to be credible enough to include some of the information in the presentations to the President and President-elect a few days ago.
