Russia to Build Permanent Syrian Naval Base, Eyes Other Outposts

By Andrew Osborn

MOSCOW (Reuters)–Russia will create a permanent naval base in Syria to expand its military footprint in its closest Middle East ally, a government official said on Monday, a week after Moscow said it was considering reopening Soviet-era bases in Vietnam and Cuba.

The move, announced by Russian Deputy Defense Minister Nikolai Pankov, is further evidence Russia is building up its capabilities in Syria despite a partial drawdown in March and another sign it is digging in for the long haul to help prop up President Bashar al-Assad.

Keep in mind that President Obama stated that President Bashar al-Assad MUST LEAVE OFFICE AND President Obama drew a red line in the sand that the US would take military action IF Assad used chemical weapons. Assad, as you know, used and has used chemical weapons recently and President Obama backed down.

Another example of President Obama leading from behind.

It is amazing to watch Lame Dork poster Markle vainly try to deflect everyone's attention away from Donald J. Trump's FAILING presidential run.

Trump cannot be rescued. His defeat will be so overwhelming that pundits will be calling this election for Hillary Clinton before the polls on the West Coast have closed. Just like what happened with Jimmy Carter in 1980.

Mr Markle your lack of knowledge is historic. I mean I do not even know what to say. I have explained repeatedly on this forum the long term Soviet presence in the Middle East which included strong ties between Nasser and the Soviets, and that at one time Syria and Egypt attempted to merge as one nation. We have been enemies of the nation state of Syria since the Israelis have been threatened by its Arab neighbors, and when the Soviets threatened nuclear war against Israel if they did not stop their invasion of Egypt.

The idiocy of this thread is that the Soviets and now Russians have had a naval base at Tartus Syria since 1970.

You can thank your hero, George W Bush, and his second in command, Dick Cheney, for invading 2 countries that never threatened the US, but in one case did threaten Poppy Bush. None of this would be happening were it not for those ill-considered invasions.

It is just such sophomoric manipulation of the truth, and posting such nonsense repeatedly without having the knowledge base to even understand history or the truth. The obscenity of the Trump campaign is that stupid people are so easily manipulated, but when their own propagandist are so utterly stupid........you get what we saw Sunday night.

Like all Progressives, you'll do anything to avoid discussing the issues. The issues frighten the pants off you all.

This is absolutely HILARIOUS, coming as it does from the person who, when confronted with any cogent argument against his views on an issue, instead of honestly discussing anything, predictably resorts to one of several well-worn avoidance maneuvers which fool no one but perhaps himself:

1.   Posts cartoons
2.   Answers questions with questions
3.   Avoids answering altogether
4.   Throws back insults at the other party
5.    Blames everything on Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, or "Progressives."

What a JOKE.

You have to take Lame Dork poster Markle's assertions with a grain of salt. He has been posting with us for 10 years, and has never, ever posted a convincing political argument.

He is nothing but a propaganda mill for the extreme-right.

The recent events of Russian provocation and expansion is the largest since wwii... all on Obama’s watch. It's not that a military option is a solution... though that's exactly what's taking place in Syria... it's that Obama has projected such weaknesses that it has empowered every tin pot dictator.

Not only Syria but Iranian backed Yemen rebels feel confident enough to shoot missiles at a U.S. Navy destroyer - knowing there will be no repercussions. They remember the Red Line in Syria too......

And for 2SO, who has military knowledge scarcely wikipedia deep, the current Russian Naval Facility at Tartus is not a permanent naval base. The difference would be lost on Mr Internet Superhero.

That the Russians also feel confident enough to exploit the Obama void in the Mideast to go after permanent facilities in Egypt (you know, the country that exudes immense control of the Suez Canal) is also telling. While Obama sleeps the Russians and Chinese are rapidly expanding their influence. Once they go through an open door they won't leave easily if they threaten our interests.

Total foreign policy failure.....

Donald Trump, Putin's puppet

By Editorial Board October 10 at 7:26 PM

ON FRIDAY, while much of the country was preoccupied with the latest revelations about Donald Trump, the U.S. intelligence community made an alarming and unprecedented announcement: Russia was seeking “to interfere with the U.S. election process” through the hacking of political organizations and individuals, including the Democratic National Committee. The statement rightly alarmed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who said in Sunday night’s debate that “we have never in the history of our country been in a situation where an adversary, a foreign power, is working so hard to influence the outcome of the election.”

And Mr. Trump? Once again, the GOP nominee played the part of Vladimir Putin’s lawyer. “She doesn’t know if it’s the Russians doing the hacking,” he said of Ms. Clinton. “Maybe there is no hacking.” Mr. Trump is receiving classified intelligence briefings, so he is certainly aware of the evidence that hackers backed by Moscow have stolen email and other records from the DNC and tried to penetrate state electoral systems. So why does he deny it? Mr. Trump’s advocacy on behalf of an aggressive U.S. rival, and the opaqueness of his motivation, is one of the most troubling aspects of his thoroughly toxic campaign.

Experts differ on whether the Putin regime is trying to tip the election to Mr. Trump, as Ms. Clinton suggested, or merely to sow confusion and distrust about the integrity of U.S. democracy. But the leaks traced to Russia through the WikiLeaks website have been aimed at Ms. Clinton — most recently emails from her campaign chairman revealing excerpts from her private speeches on Wall Street. The timing of the WikiLeaks releases, clearly calculated to do maximum damage to the Democrats, confirms (again) that the website is not a crusader for transparency, but a willing political agent of the Kremlin.

Perhaps Mr. Trump knows nothing about all this, as he protested. But he has defended Mr. Putin and his crimes throughout his campaign. He brushed off the fact that journalists and other opponents of the Russian ruler have been murdered and claimed Russia had not invaded Ukraine. He has repeatedly called Mr. Putin a better leader than President Obama.

In Sunday’s debate, Mr. Trump reeled off a series of false statements about Russia’s intervention in Syria, saying it was aimed at the Islamic State even though almost all of Russia’s bombs have fallen on rebel groups fighting the regime of Bashar al-Assad, or on civilians. He then rejected the statement by running mate Mike Pence that “provocations by Russia need to be met with American strength” and the United States should consider using “military force to strike military targets of the Assad regime” if Russia’s bombing of Aleppo continued. (Abjectly, Mr. Pence on Monday attempted to deny that he said those words in the vice-presidential debate.) “I think it would be great if we got along with Russia because we could fight ISIS together,” Mr. Trump said at Sunday’s debate.

Republican vice-presidential candidate Gov. Mike Pence called Russian leader Vladimir Putin "small and bullying" but also that he was "stronger on the world stage" than President Obama. (Gillian Brockell/The Washington Post)

Here’s what we don’t know: Does Mr. Trump propose this collaboration with a regime obsessed with thwarting and weakening American power out of ignorance and naivete, or because of personal and business interests he has not disclosed? Mr. Putin surely knows the answer to that question — but U.S. voters do not.

No surprise.

I post facts about a critical issue and the Progressives respond with...nothing.

Progressives, is my post true or false?

Then tell us how it is a good thing for Russia to be moving nuclear weapons closer to Western Europe.

Keep in mind, Russia promised not to move those missiles if then-new President Barack Hussein Obama reneged on installing the promised anti-missiles in Poland.

President Obama went back on his word (Shocking) and, of course, we have gotten nothing and Putin has his nuclear missiles where he wants them without a squeel from Obama.

I wouldn't let Obama negotiate buying a used car.

What exactly led y'all to believe he would have any idea what to do? A class or two on foreign history?

Obama: "On all these issues, but particularly missile defence, this, this can be solved but it's important for him to give me space."

Medvedev: "Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you …"

Obama: "This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility."

Medvedev: "I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir [Putin]."

I call absolute BS on gator and PK......Mr. Markle is without the capacity to understand. I will type this slowly. The Soviet Union was aligned with Nassar and Syria in the Cold War. Both in the 1967 and 1973 Middle East wars, the Soviets threatened military intervention which included sending nuclear weapons to Egypt by ship in 1973 if the Israelis did not stop their advance. American policy for close to fifty years, has been that Syria was our enemy and an ally of the soviets and Russians. The Israelis and Saudis poured resources into Syria to further weaken the dictator and topple the nation state by fermenting the civil war.......America did exactly what our policy was for those same forty something years and YES in the beginning we were gleeful that Syria was blowing up.......until in that collapse ISIS which was funding by our ally Saudi Arabia consolidated power and became just as dangerous as syria.........but the key to any analysis is WHY has there been no major attack on Israel by ISIS. You see the fact is that the Russians know how deep we are in this mess, but to suggest the Russians are expanding their influence in Syria......nope......as to Gator even being in the same zip code of Middle East knowledge from 1965 to 1980.....politely, I would suggest you are clueless. The Russians are a second rate economic power whose 3rd largest GDP in the Soviet era has dropped to 13th behind Australia in 2015, the Soviet presence was huge.....the current Russian military which Trump trembles cannot be sustained based on their dropping GDP. The military is destroying their economy, and the boom of dropping military expenditures in the 1990s and the oil boom pulled the soviets from bankruptcy, but Putin is spending on the military and his corrupt regime is stealing Russia blind as its economy continues to tumble and anybody with nuclear weapons is not toothless, but the Russians are weakening as we speak, and the economic sanctions are crushing them.......so folks learn history and reality.

Here we have 2seaoat aka BoardsofFL preaching to learn history and reality when they can't write a comprehensive paragraph.  PLUS, we are talking about what has to be done TODAY, NOT what might or should have happened decades ago.

It is little wonder their posts are incomprehensible.  FYI, when writing an authors target should be somewhere between 8th and 9th-grade reading level for the most people to be able to read and comprehend the piece.

2seaoat/BoardsofFl intentionally make their responses as difficult as possible for anyone to comprehend.  Obviously, they both know as much about current events as they do the English language.

I see change the topic. Your absolute lack of substantive knowledge is once again confirmed. President Obama has knocked Russia to their knees and of course they do not want Hillary Clinton as President......more intelligence and tough real understanding of our world. Mr. Markle was selling real estate oblivious to foreign policy as proven every time he pretends to have knowledge.....cut and paste some more, but in the end you are stuck being the forum dumb asz.....you used to actually make a a few cogent observations....you are blinded by senility or frustration that your perverse world is irrelevant and morality does matter. History does matter as it better provides the context of actors in this world than some tinfoil blogs which Mr. Markle depends.
