The problem is that the U.S. needs to stop pushing Russia around by moving NATO eastward and establishing bases all over the former Warsaw Pact countries and now independent former Soviet Republics.

This entirely has everything to do with the U.S. trying to control the flow of petroleum from the Asian landmass. That is why we are suddenly in Africa everywhere, too.

It all goes back to a statement uttered by Henry Kissinger in 1974: "He who controls the oil can control nations...."

We seem to ignore the fact that our former Cold War rival is still a major nuclear power who has been investing in recapitalizing its nuclear forces (something the U.S. has not been doing, but which we must do in the next 15 years to not be vulnerable).
