As a kid, we would go to the local bait shop and they would let us use a seine net to collect crawfish. We were given a penny for each one we caught and we had much fun wadding in the river collecting them, selling our fish, and hunting for golf balls around the local golf course......a kid's life is pretty laid back and was full of freedom without parental supervision. Well, I am watching on tv this morning folks cooking up 10k pounds of crawfish at a festival, and I have NEVER tried crawfish, and the only part I think which would be edible is the tail meat, but help me as to how you eat crawfish and what parts are edible and how hard is it to get to......

I posted  last month....we had a Crawfish boil. My family loves it, even the kids. Me, I will eat a little of the tail meat but prefer a shrimp boil.

The last party, we had a cop drive by and we invited her to jon us...she called for backup.

The kids taught thE deputies how to eat crawfish in exchange for being handcuffed.

As far as aquatic organisms go, if it lives in a shell or crawls on the bottom, Z-man is NOT going to eat it. I love fish, but reject all other forms of aquatic life as food.

Some people are allergic to shellfish.

Do y'all eat deviled crab in the panhandle.

I was unfamiliar with this Cuban dish before moving to the Tampa area.

They are delicious.

Give me two, a bottle of hot sauce, and a cold beer, and I am in heaven.

Just split the shell along the bottom like you would a shrimp and eat the tail. That's all I will eat...no sucking the head;) ...don't eat them very often, but when my SIL comes to town, he usually buys a couple of pounds already cooked in hot sauce and consumes the entire thing. He lived in Lafayette for a few years while working offshore. Good with dirty rice on the side.

Deviled crab is served here as well as dveiled crab cakes....but not like Ybor City. It is served in a crab shell or made into a patty  with a light breading like dressing. I prefer the heavy on the crab light on the breading.

Thanks for the information. If I was feeling better, I would try to get some at the festival, but it appears they put a powdered hot mix after boiling the crawfish, and the way my digestive system is going lately I will have to pass......my favorite treat right now at one Illinois casino is escargot, and like lobster, I would prefer to dip the tail in warm butter than have it too spicy.....just my inherent limitations now as I already have visited the bathroom at the mac's and home depot in Pace this morning......Bob.....this thing is starting to get ugly, and I hope your therapy can keep you away from where I am beginning to go, but the joy of watching a grandmother and two beautiful little girls at Macs made me appreciate every minute. I really like the decor of the Pace Macs and they keep their bathrooms spotless.....a new priority in my life which cannot deal with spicy crawfish right now....probably ever.

How I don't eat them is at the over priced Pensacola Crawfish Fest.

Best crawfish of all time was at Shannohan's downtown. It's a shame they went out of business. Used to go there every Sunday after tennis for a flat of crawfish.

Now, I am not going to eat snails, either. Those same European snails are an invasive organism in Orange County, CA, and are a garden pest there. The only thing good for them is this stuff:

I remember when I was 14, we were visiting San Francisco, and my Grandad took us all to a restaurant where they served escargot. When I found out that "escargot" was cooked snails, my stomach suddenly felt horribly queasy. I think I would eat plain dirt before I would eat a snail......

I like snails, too. I used to get them in Houston at Jeremiah's Greenhouse.

Escargot require the special dish. It is a series of indented dimples where the escargot sits in butter, garlic, and other garnishes which the chef prepares. The best come out with the dish too hot to touch and the mixture of butter and garlic bubbling to a boil. Where I go now gives you a loaf of bread with the escargot, and I top it off with a virgin bloody mary.......at the casino this amazing mini meal is only 11 bucks, and this morning my big breakfast at Macs was 8 bucks with a drink......no comparison as to quality or flavor....and although most just have it as an appetizer, with the loaf of bread soaking up the butter in the little indentations you leave totally full, and have a great time playing poker after that meal.

The only problem with escargot is it tastes like snails.

My parents retired to La Palma, CA, in Orange County. Snails were a real problem in yards in his neighborhood. These were imported snails from Europe--the same ones they make escargot from--that had escaped and become invasive. Dad would put Snarol out at night, then pick it back up in the morning so the dog would not eat it. Then, one year a opossum family--another imported beast not native to California--moved into the neighborhood. They had a ready food supply with all of the snails infesting neighborhood gardens, and naturally took care of the infestations. It must have been a plentiful supply, as they opossum family grew healthily--while maintaining a stealthy appearance within the neighborhood.

I was a Monday night regular, $2 pitchers of beer and the Big Picture, I think, on stage.
