I was going to use my one ton dump truck to pull the 38 by 11.6 foot park model rv from Illinois, but the recent surgery put a damper on the same. We had called a broker who transports back in December, and they took the initial deposit of six hundred, and bought the permits, but their driver backed out when we did not have the brake lights on the trailer. The oversize drivers usually all have their own wireless brake and turn signal wires.
Well after the surgery, my bil when asked by my wife who did not want me driving offered to take it down with his one ton diesel. He got six miles to the gallon. My wife was the escort car and had a rotating yellow light, red flags and a yellow oversize load banner, which the rv and bil truck also had. Around the middle of Illinois, one of the three wheels on each side simple flew off the damn rv. My wife was escorting in front of the vehicle and my BIL never felt or saw the wheel fly off.....I mean rim and tire. It could have killed somebody, but at the time they were driving there was sparse traffic. When they stopped to fuel they always walked around the RV and they discovered the wheel was gone. A person at the gas station as my wife was putting the spare on the RV saw that one of the wheel clips was missing and he went to his home and got some clips so the spare could be secured on the axle. Nice and helpful people are everywhere. Well they refused compensation, but my wife can be quite insistent and she said something to the effect that here....take this twenty and buy some beers to keep that bar down there in business.....he took the money and smiled.
Got to Metropolis Illinois across the river from Paducah when another tire was hissing, so again my wife jacks the RV up and takes the tire to a repair shop when they opened in the morning and they put a new tube in, and they were into the mountains........pretty gusty winds slowed them down and being that oversize permits will not allow you to drive at night, they only got south of birmingham and found a motel. Problem in the morning.....a Semi trailer had made it near impossible to get out of the parking lot and they had to wait a couple hours until truck was moved. They finally got to Florida where I met them only to find out my bil had shoulder surgery and could not help my wife twice remove the tires......she is smarter than most, and she is as strong as a bull as I have become quite weak. She is more mechanical than most men and she did not hesitate to vent with me......she said with all the problems it was refreshing not to have to have listened to somebody for three days....oops......I sensed a bit of resentment.....well at least we all laughed at Flounders last night as the adventure was over. Now with my luck, there will be a hurricane this summer and float the damn rv away.
