Wait until that happens at the Federal level for things like Social Security/other entitlements, and Civil Service and Military retirement, etc. It is entirely feasible.

The Republican governor is shutting down the government rather than allowing the temporary income tax increase to continue for three years while making cuts without panic. I personally think the state should have kept the income tax for three more years and then take a hard stand, but the legislature is controlled by the democrats and the governor ran on no new taxes.....there is a smart way to fix this, but the economy actually is doing pretty good.

Oh in Illinois the Republicans and Democrats share in thirty years of abuses. Governor Thompson was the worse offender and he was a Republican who kicked the can down the road. A judge or politlician could work four years and get a vested pension and full medical. It was only recently that retired state employees started paying some of their insurance, and that is in court. The teachers paid their retirement benefits into the system, and the state was suppose to match, but the politicians made sure their pensions were golden with some politicians getting three pensions, yet the teachers paid their medical from the get go. The temporary income tax allows the state to get their bond ratings back, and working on solutions will require the same. Illinois is a wealthy state, but if the United States does not address the ability of states to declare bankruptcy, there is no way to overcome the constitutional provisions that protect state politicians, judges, teachers and state employees. I have advocated state bankruptcies for ten years on the PNJ. It is the only way to take on public unions.......and yes.....Republicans share the blame for the mess in Illinois.....I know this intimately.
