It was supposed to last only 10 years and it is still functioning after 25 years.
It is gradually losing altitude and will naturally de-orbit between 2020 and 2030. NASA expects to send up a robotic mission to attach a propulsion package to allow a controlled re-entry into the ocean. If allowed to re-enter over land, some parts are expected to survive re-entry and could pose a hazard to populated areas.
A newer space telescope is expected to be launched in 2018.
