Probably because the story originates from a wingnut blog from nowhere that you like to read.

Thank you so much for posting a link to this most refreshing video. I really enjoyed seeing it.

It may have been found on a right wing site but it was originally recorded in Cambridge, Mass. and is basically a reading by Obama from his book. He reads a passage about an experience he had in Hawaii at age 16 and then answers some questions from the audience.
Thanks again.

That website sucks! It's mostly just lame advertising..... Only a true conservative useful idiot would read and believe the crap from this site. Since PeeDawg regularly posts links from this website on this forum, it says a lot about his mindset.

Wingnuts like to toss out DailyKOS and other liberal websites as mush for the minds of Democrats. Conservativetribune.com falls about 10 ladder-rungs below DailyKOS in the level of mush offered to the weak-minded souls who would read there.

It is a pet peeve of mine to see Daily KOS etc. discounted out of hand by the WN's. As I've said recently a fact is a fact no matter where it is posted. In this case the semi-hysterical wing nut site posted this very nice video of Obama reading from one of his books. He looks/is so young. I totally enjoyed seeing it.

Here's the thing though, I enjoyed seeing it because I like the man but the intent apparently was to enrage the wingers because he referenced a friend of his grandfather, a journalist and poet that the FBI had a 600 page file on.  The guy is I guess, supposed to be yet another hair on fire boogie man from Obama's past meant to shed discredit on him. It is just sad to me how upset these wingers can get over basically nothing. It is a wonder they all don't fall down with heart attacks just at the mere thought of Obama in the WH!!

Have you watched the video? It is really a treat!

Frank Marshall Davis (1905-1987) was a central figure in the black press, working as reporter and editor for the Atlanta World, the Associated Negro Press, the Chicago Star, and the Honolulu Record. Writings of Frank Marshall Davis presents a selection of Davis's nonfiction, providing an unprecedented insight into one journalist's ability to reset the terms of public conversation and frame the news to open up debate among African Americans and all Americans.

During the middle of the twentieth century, Davis set forth a radical vision that challenged the status quo. His commentary on race relations, music, literature, and American culture was precise, impassioned, and engaged. At the height of World War II, Davis boldly questioned the nature of America's potential postwar relations and what they meant for African Americans and the nation. His work challenged the usefulness of race as a social construct, and he eventually disavowed the idea of race altogether. Throughout his career, he championed the struggles of African Americans for equal rights and laboring people seeking fair wages and other benefits.

In his reviews on music, he argued that blues and jazz were responses to social conditions and served as weapons of racial integration. His book reviews complemented his radical vision by commenting on how literature reshapes one's understanding of the world. Even his travel writings on Hawaii called for cultural pluralism and tolerance for racial and economic difference. Writings of Frank Marshall Davis reveals a writer in touch with the most salient issues defining his era and his desire to insert them into the public sphere. John Edgar Tidwell provides an introduction and contextual notes on each major subject area Davis explored.

John Edgar Tidwell is an associate professor of English at the University of Kansas. He edited Frank Marshall Davis's Livin' the Blues: Memoirs of a Black Journalist and Poet and his Black Moods: Collected Poems.

It was a perfectly delightful video clip. The wingers can get so entirely worked up over the most insignificant details that they manage to blow out of all proportion just to get/keep their witless followers in a state of semi-conscious agitation. Agitated people don't think clearly. It is just pathetic how easily some people get worked up over virtually nothing.

Just enjoy the video!

I am certainly enjoying this video...and it reminds me of why I voted for President Obama in the first place...because he could speak...and could speak in a way that resonated with me. I have always and will always admire him for his accomplishments...and I believe he will be remembered as one of our greatest presidents.

Glad you enjoyed seeing it FT. It is a perfect example of how different people can look at the same thing and come to totally opposite feelings about it. We see a bright intelligent young man dealing with his identity as a black American and the wingers see...what? a communist threat? Such is human nature. It would be funny if it weren't so ...what? distorted? tainted? blind?

That you would believe the tripe from websites like conservativetribune.com, chicksontheright.com, etc., is proof of this.

Then again, you are still looking for Obama's "real" birth certificate, too. You live in a parallel universe that is definitely not based on reality.

Are you questioning that Frank Marshall Davis was a well known Communist or that he was, as semi-retired President Obama described him, his mentor during Obama's years in Hawaii?

In a few years when he is out of office and more rankings begin to roll in, I can almost guarantee you that Obama will be a top 15 all time president - which is a vast improvement over the previous Bush administration (currently averaging 36th all time)

SENATOR JOSEPH MCCARTHY, MCCARTHYISM, AND THE WITCH HUNT

On November 14, 1908, Joseph McCarthy was born into a Roman Catholic family as the fifth of nine children in Appleton, Wisconsin. Although McCarthy dropped out of grade school at the age fourteen, he returned to diligently finish his studies in 1928, permitting him to attend Marquette University. Once accepted, he began his journey to become what many historians consider to be one of the least qualified, most corrupt politicians of his time. After receiving his law diploma at Marquette University, McCarthy dabbled in unsuccessful law practices, and indulged in gambling along the way for extra financing. Despite being a Democrat early in his political years, he quickly switched into the Republican Party after being overlooked as a candidate in the Democratic Party for district attorney. His dirty campaign to win the position as circuit court judge proved to be an ominous foreshadowing to his later era of “McCarthyism.”

To stimulate his political career, McCarthy quit his job as circuit court judge and joined the Marines during World War II. After his short military career McCarthy then ran as the Republican candidate for the Wisconsin Senate seat, where he used propaganda and erroneous accusations against his opponent, Robert La Follette, to promote his own campaign. Damaging La Follete’s reputation by claiming he hadn’t enlisted in the military during the war, McCarthy won the election and became Senator.

As re-election began to loom closer, McCarthy, whose first term was unimpressive, searched for ways to ensure his political success, resorting even to corruption. Edmund Walsh, a close fellow Roman Catholic and anti-communist suggested a crusade against so-called communist subversives. McCarthy enthusiastically agreed and took advantage of the nation’s wave of fanatic terror against communism, and emerged on February 9, 1950, claiming he had a list of 205 people in the State Department who were known members of the American Communist Party. The American public went crazy with the thought of seditious communists living within the United States, and roared for the investigation of the underground agitators. These people on the list were in fact not all communists; some had proven merely to be alcoholics or sexual deviants. Regardless, McCarthy relentlessly pushed through and became the chairman of the Government Committee on Operations of the Senate, widening his scope to “investigate” dissenters. He continued to investigate for over two years, relentlessly questioning numerous government departments and the panic arising from the witch-hunts and fear of communism became know as McCarthyism.

Joseph McCarthy then accused several innocent citizens, most notably Owen Lattimore, of being associated with communism. Along the way, he had Louis Budenz, the former editor of The Daily Worker, back his accusations with evidence that was circumstantial at best, for Budenz was only using information he had heard from other people as much as 13 years prior. Another victim of McCarthy’s spurious communist accusations was Drew Pearson, a critic who discredited McCarthy’s accusations regularly through columns and radio broadcasts. McCarthy made seven speeches to the Senate on Pearson, which resulted in the loss of sponsors to Pearson’s show. Also, money was then raised to help numerous men sue Pearson, all charges of which he was found innocent and not liable.

McCarthy’s downfall finally began in October of 1953, when he started to investigate “communist infiltration into the military.” This was the final straw for then president Dwight D. Eisenhower, who realized that McCarthy’s movement needed to be stopped. The Army fired back at the accusations, sending information about McCarthy and advisors abusing congressional privileges to known critics of McCarthy. Reporters, Drew Pearson included, and other critics soon hopped on board, publishing unflattering articles about Joseph McCarthy and his methods of seeking out the supposed communists in America.

Through the televised investigations into the United States Army and the reporters’ attack, the nation grew to realize that McCarthy was “evil and unmatched in malice.” He lost his position as chairmanship on the Government Committee on Operations of the Senate and in December of 1954, a censure motion, which is a formal reprimand from a powerful body, was issued condemning his conduct with the vote count at 67 to 22. The media subsequently became disinterested in his communist allegations and McCarthy was virtually stripped of his power. He died in May of 1957 after being diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver due to heavy drinking. The resounding effects of McCarthy’s era symbolized the pure terror of communism during the time due to the Cold War. Although it came to an end in a few short years, it attributed to the growing dissension between the Soviets and United States.

What is not true and what is propaganda?

Did semi-retired President Obama's former "Green Czar" NOT call himself a radical communist?

What about Valarie Jarrett's father-in-law?  Was he not a radical, Communist journalist during the same time period as President Obama's self declared mentor Frank Marshall Davis?

Which is worse? Fascism or Communism?

Fascism should more appropriately be called corporatism, because it is a merger of state and corporate power.  Benito Mussolini

You make it sound as if anyone with an interest or sympathy with communism is actively involved in some effort to violently overthrow the government of the United States. For crying out loud are you against freedom of thought or freedom of association or freedom to gather peacefully to organize for a cause they believe in?

Calling someone a socialist in your mind is an insult. It is nothing more than an attempt to change the subject and push buttons in some minds. So transparent. As you can see this is nothing new. The country goes through these spells from time to time.

Red-baiting is the act of accusing, denouncing, attacking or persecuting an individual or group as communist,[1] socialist, or anarchist, or sympathetic toward communism,[2] socialism, or anarchism. The word "red" in "red-baiting" is derived from the red flag signifying radical left-wing politics. In the United States the term "red-baiting" dates from at least 1927.[3] In 1928, black-listing by the Daughters of the American Revolution was characterized as a "red-baiting relic".[4] It is a term commonly used in the United States, and in United States history, red-baiting is most often associated with McCarthyism, which originated in the two historic Red Scare periods of the 1920s (First Red Scare) and 1950s (Second Red Scare).[5] In the 21st century, red-baiting does not have quite the same effect it previously did due to the fall of Soviet-style Communism,[6] but some pundits have argued that notable events in current American politics indicates a resurgence of red-baiting consistent with the 1950s.[7][8]

I did not call Frank Marshall Davis a Socialist, I called him a Communist. Which is true.

Wordslinger claims to be a Socialist, no one called him that as pejorative, he proudly claims that for himself and used the name of Adolph Hitler's personal train as his signature. Personally, I believe he is ashamed to call himself a Communist.

So, the question you are asking is what is true and what is propaganda among the thousands of postings you've posted? Seriously?

Usually what you do is post some incendiary comment or illusion to something you think is horrible, like someone being associated with a known communist in hopes of sidetracking the thread to a discussion of a different topic.

To answer the question of this thread I would say I find it totally irrelevant that Frank Marshall Davis was a friend of President Obama's grandfather and that he considered him a mentor. What exactly is the harm in that? Are you suggesting that some treasonist plot is afoot as a result of this relationship? People have different ways of looking at government, get over it.
