Came from W st to hgy 29, went north to Johnson ave. I saw five ECSO cars blaring their lights up hgy 29 at every traffic light. I bet I was going 25 mph behind the deputy in a 45 mph zone. I hope the criminals took a donut break while these deputies were escorting those few funeral cars. What a waste of taxpayer money.

Another yankee bitching about Southern hospitality. I dont mind paying for these escorts in the least.

the number is probably related to the logistics of running ahead to time intersections etc...

You are aware...well reading your rant you're not...the Traffic Unit handles the escorts unless it's a larger event...And if there was not a law enforcement presence you and others would still whine...actually the escorts provided lower the time traffic is effected...WalMart is open 24 Hours so relax and be respectful....

Every time I see cops escorting a funeral procession, I am thankful. When we buried my dad a few years back, the funeral director failed to notify the appropriate authorities of what time we would be leaving. There is a major intersection just after we left the funeral home and since we had no escort, a young man had the right of way because the light was green in his direction. We he T-boned the hearse carrying my fathers remains. That was a very traumatic experience to me and my family and I would never want to see or hear of it happening to anyone else.

So I will gladly spend my tax dollars in support of police escorts for funerals, regardless of how many units it takes.

An Escambia County deputy was injured in a traffic accident Wednesday morning, on her way to a call.

The Sheriff’s Office says, at 7:20 a.m., Dep. Melissa Scruggs was on her way to check out reports of an armed disturbance, when her vehicle ran off the side of the New Warrington Road overpass in West Pensacola.

After emergency crews extracted her from the cruiser, she was taken to the hospital, where she is in serious condition.

The accident shut down the ramps from New Warrington Road and part of Fairfield Drive for a couple of hours.

Debra Newlan, who works nearby said she heard the accident. "We heard that, the cop car, the siren die and we actually had an employee call me on the phone and say they can't get into work, the streets are blocked off. So I walked out here."

Dep. Scruggs has been with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office for two and a half years.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, Scrugg's vehicle struck a guardrail that borders eastbound New Warrington Road and then traveled into the median. The car then struck a bridge concrete barrier wall and traveled over it. Scrugg's vehicle came to a final rest at the bottom of the overpass embankment on Mobile Highway.

"According to the FHP report, Scruggs was not wearing a seatbelt."

"Seatbelts Save Lives" I wonder how many tickets she wrote for that infraction? Looking at dispatched calls there were already units on the scene when she wrecked.. 10-18 on wet roads is never a good idea..

That may be true, but when they receive an armed disturbance or shits fired call, the cowboy in them kicks in and they tend to travel 10-18. Depending on circumstances, at times I believe that dispatch advises the deputy to proceed 10-18.

Before the radios went encrypted I used to hear dispatch a 10-18 call and then after the first responders got on scene, a supervisor would call off the remaining 10-18 responders.

We all tend to do that sometimes but you know the saying "Fools rush in where armchair quarterbacks fear to tread". Oh well

If a civilian did that it would at the least be a driving too fast for conditions and no seatbelt citations.. You need to know your limitations..

It's Morgans fault. If Powell had been elected this would not have happened.

Probably true. I think the lady deputy was driving reckless. Wearing no seat belt is a no no. I see deputies all the time violating the driving laws. guess how many ECSO cars escorted the ambulance to Baptist Hospital?

Seven!

Ever see deputies escorting ambulances carrying non LEO patients? No.

It is hard to determine from outside if a deputy is wearing a seat belt or not. I know several deputies both in Santa Rosa and Escambia Counties. Most of them do not wear the shoulder harness. When the get in the vehicle they place the shoulder strap behind their back so they can exit the vehicle quickly if the need should arise.

To add to GP. I have gone to hundreds of wrecks where the State Troopers have put into their report that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt when the patient had the unmistakable red marks on the shoulder from having worn them. In 95% of these rollover wrecks like the deputy had if the person did not have a belt on they were ejected. My point is that the State Trooper can only put into his report what he personally sees. FFs and EMS crews routinely take off selt belts from patients during extrication and leave before FHP gets on scene. Take from that what you will.
