Fed up with the passage of an 18½-page incoherent, rambling, unconstitutional gun control initiative that was bankrolled by billionaires, gun owners across Washington state held the largest felony civil disobedience rally in the nation’s history, brazenly titled “I Will Not Comply.” No one was hurt and no stores were looted. Between 1,000 and 3,000 lawful gun owners showed up openly armed at the state capitol in Olympia, Wash., on Saturday to defy the newly passed gun control law, I-594.

Civil disobedience is an essential part of American democracy. However, If anybody thinks an individual will not be arrested who is violating the law they are sadly mistaken. Here is what was passed by the voters of Washington State in initiative 594:

The initiative is simple: it makes sure that anyone buying a gun in Washington State passes the same background check, no matter where they buy the gun and no matter whom they buy it from.
When a private seller and buyer arrange to meet in person to conduct the transfer, they would meet at a licensed dealer, instead of in a parking lot or another public place.
The buyer and the licensed dealer would proceed as if the buyer were trying to purchase from a dealer. The buyer would complete the proper forms, and the dealer would call in the background check—in the exact same way as if the dealer were selling a firearm from its own inventory.
This initiative simply has private sales go through the same process people have been using successfully for years when purchasing from a licensed dealer.
This is an accessible process. 98% of Washingtonians live within 10 miles of a dealer. In fact, there are twice as many licensed gun dealers in Washington as there are US post offices. Private parties complying with the background check requirement are exempt from sales tax.

Reasonable Exceptions – background checks are not required for:

Gifts between immediate family members
Antiques and relics
Temporary transfers for self-defense
Loans for lawful hunting or sporting activities

My cousin sent a double barreled shot gun my father had given his brother to an gun dealer where I signed the transfer in those offices and picked it up three days later. It was seamless and easy. The idea that initiative 594 is unconstitutional is laughable, as the Supreme Court has made it clear that registration and restrictions on gun ownership are constitutional, and that was a very strict constructionist Supreme Court. I like the idea of civil disobedience where beliefs are strong, but it is hilarious to think that individuals will not be facing sanctions for violating the law....they will.

Gun Control is against the law in America. Even felons should have their 2nd amendment rights returned after they have done their time. Infringed is not a hard word to understand....

What is INFRINGEMENT?
A breaking into; a trespass or encroachment upon; a violation of a law, regulation, contract, or right.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

If you were planning to confiscate guns like so many other countries... it's important to have a record of them.

The Supreme Court interprets the Constitution and like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.

The Supreme Court decisions have been consistent in this regard for nearly 100 years. Heller clearly showed that they protect our second amendment rights, but that those rights are not unlimited, and limitations have been held constitutional repeatedly. Now if you want to pass a constitutional amendment to the second amendment which expressly limits the right of government to limit the manner of use and type of weapons, please work for that goal, but in the meantime the law of the land stands clear and without exception......the Supreme Court determines constitutionality. You lose.

If you are going to gather citizens and gas them, it is important to have birth certificates. Therefore, because of potential abuse of government using birth records we should not issue birth certificates......splendid logic.

Seaoat,
It's an added hoop to jump through and an additonal cost to the seller and buyer. That makes it a violation of the 2nd Amendment. It impedes my ability to buy and sell as I please without another added cost.

Sorry, that argument has NEVER been successful in regard to registrations and the second amendment. Government is exercising its constitutional power which the courts recognize. I have bought guns over forty years ago from private individuals like I was buying their lawn mower. Any guns I have bought in the last 10 years have been in properly documented and transferred. It was seamless and not an additional burden.

The fifth amendment protects our rights in private property ownership, yet when I buy a car from an individual privately, I must transfer title. A person could make the same argument you are making that titles and registration of vehicles is a violation of their fifth amendment right to ownership of property.......the courts disagree and have ALWAYS stated that the bill of rights is not absolute and that reasonable restrictions on the same are constitutional. The gun merchants have successfully turned people's brains off, and I have lived a life around guns with my childhood filled with fond memories of Sunday afternoons at gun clubs with our entire family participating.
