Word ...

I hate Republicans. I can’t stand the thought of having to spend the next two years watching Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Ted Cruz, Darrell Issa or any of the legions of other blowhards denying climate change, thwarting immigration reform or championing fetal “personhood.”

This loathing is a relatively recent phenomenon. Back
in the 1970s, I worked for a Republican, Fred Lippitt, the senate minority leader in Rhode Island, and I loved him. He was a brand of Republican now extinct—a “moderate” who was fiscally conservative but progressive about women’s rights, racial justice and environmental preservation. Had he been closer to my age, I could have contemplated marrying someone like Fred. Today, marrying a Republican is unimaginable to me. And I’m
not alone. Back in 1960, only 5
percent of Republicans and 4
 percent of Democrats said they’d
be “displeased” if their child married someone from the opposite
 party. Today? Forty-nine percent
of Republicans and 33 percent of
 Democrats would be pissed.

According to a recent study
by Stanford professor Shanto
 Iyengar and Princeton researcher
Sean Westwood, such polarization has increased dramatically
in recent years. What’s noteworthy
is how entrenched this mutual animus is. It’s fine for me to use the word “hate” when referring to Republicans and for them to use the same word about me, but you would never use the word “hate” when referring to people of color, or women, or gays and lesbians.

And now party identification and hatred shape a whole host of non-political decisions. Iyengar and Westwood asked participants in their study to review the resumés of graduating high school seniors to decide which ones should receive scholarships. Some resumés had cues about party affiliation (say, member of the Young Republicans Club) and some about racial identity (also through extracurricular activities, or via a stereotypical name). Race mattered, but not nearly as much as partisanship. An overwhelming 80 percent of partisans chose the student of their own party. And this held true even if the candidate from the opposite party had better credentials.

How did we come to this pass? Obviously, my tendency is to blame the Republicans more than the Democrats, which may seem biased. But history and psychological research bear me out.

Let’s start with the history. This isn’t like a fight between siblings, where the parent says, “It doesn’t matter who started it.” Yes, it does.

A brief review of Republican rhetoric and strategies since the 1980s shows an escalation of determined vilification (which has been amplified relentlessly on Fox News since 1996). From Spiro Agnew’s attack on intellectuals as an “effete corps of impudent snobs”; to Rush Limbaugh’s hate speech; to the GOP’s endless campaign
to smear the Clintons over Whitewater, then bludgeon Bill over Monica Lewinsky; to the ceaseless denigration of President Obama (“socialist,” “Muslim”), the Republicans have crafted a political identity that rests on a complete repudiation of the idea that the opposing party and its followers have any legitimacy at all.

Why does this work? A series of studies has found that political conservatives tend toward certain psychological characteristics. What are they? Dogmatism, rigidity and intolerance
of ambiguity; a need to avoid uncertainty; support for authoritarianism; a heightened sense of threat from others; and a personal need for structure. How do these qualities influence political thinking?

According to researchers, the two core dimensions of conservative thought are resistance to change and support for inequality. These, in turn, are core elements of social intolerance. The need for certainty, the need to manage fear of social change, lead to black-and-white thinking and an embrace of stereotypes. Which could certainly lead to a desire to deride those not like you—whether people of color, LGBT people or Democrats. And, especially since the early 1990s, Republican politicians and pundits have been feeding these needs with a single-minded, uncomplicated, good-vs.-evil worldview that vilifies Democrats.

So now we hate them back. And for good reason. Which is too bad. I miss the Fred Lippitts of yore and the civilized discourse and political accomplishments they made possible. And so do millions of totally fed-up Americans.

Nothing like a polarizing hate piece by some minor league college professor to get liberals excited!

They have a new HERO, sort of a print-based Rush LimBum Talking Head for the ultra-liberal drones instead of the tea banger drones.

Politics - the most entertaining game in town.

Thanks for posting this comment. What you posted is absolutely true.

What are today's republicans FOR?

White supremacy.

Praising and supporting the ultra wealthy and denigrating the poor.

No sex whatever until you -- a man and a woman only -- are married in a Christian church. And then only to procreate and not for pleasure -- not EVER!

The end of all taxation, regulations, public education, environmental regulations or laws, social security, welfare, and free healthcare.

A white America which is for the rich, of the rich and by the rich.

An automated death ray border protection system for both our borders.

Militarized police who will have the right to decide whether a suspect should be killed on the spot or simply severely beaten.

Giving all police the right to apply "enhanced interrogation techniques" as they see fit -- except in the case of white, protestant teenagers.

An America unafraid to bomb, drone, invade, torture, and exterminate the residents of any country, anywhere, regardless of monetary costs.

A president and congress that cheers the above capabilities.

The banning of all non-patriotic tattoos.

Universal sterilization of non-white races.

Prosecution and death sentences for any woman who gets an abortion, regardless of circumstances.

Removal of all non-republican candidates from election issues.

Erecting a 450' tall monument to Rush Limbaugh in Washington DC.

Once they control the presidency and both houses of congress, they should simply declare the leader of their choice emperor. His last name must be Bush, of course.

Making Sean Hannity a Cardinal.

Posting cement or plastic replicas of the Ten Commandments on every stall door in public restrooms.

The burning of all science books that conflict with the earth being 6,000 years old. The public execution of Stephen Hawking.

The appointment of Charles Krauthammer as Secretary of Wisdom.

The declaration that Ann Coulter is the most beautiful and wisest American ever hatched, and an immediate end to all beauty contests, male or female.

The establishment of a chain of Michele Malkin Sexual Massage Parlors in all red states.

The elimination of all competing news broadcasts other than those of FOX News.

Mixed martial art contests which are always won by white competitors.

The tar and feathering and skinning alive of our first black president, as reported by Brit Hume.

The total extermination of Iranians everywhere.

American Madrassas, where white kids are taught to hate everyone not approved by Charles Krauthammer, and who are guided to military careers in our new Army of God (with scholarships to the Jesus Military Academy sponsored by the Koch Bros. and located in South Carolina).

And, in full support of our biggest corporations, the elimination of all wages.

Finally, the enhanced interrogation and public hangings of all liberal members of the Pensacola Forum.

Reality.

LOL! You have an active imagination but it's your "reality".

I always dislike painting an entire group of people who happen belong to certain party with the same broad brush.

Kind of reminiscent of Hitler and the Jews......

Have a similar "reality" piece for Democrats and Independents?

After a recent conversation I had with another poster it appears the left hold many of the same traits. The whole article that you're promoting sounds like that scene out of Kingdom Of Heaven when they reach the sea... "It's not a sin to kill infidels it's a pathway to God!" It's amazing how the liberal left, who supposedly believe in cultural diversity, follow the same path they accuse their opposition of as they follow their Nobel Champion and their hate as they bellow for war...

It's true.

Unless you're a rich, white, christian, straight man, you have every reason to hate Republicans, because they sure as hell have been shown to hate you.

That's irrefutable.

But, gatorfan derides the piece because "college professor", or "liberal drones", or "Rush LimBum", or something.

lol

Yep, get that BIG paint brush out. Some minor league professor writes a hate piece as far to left as Rush Bimbomb is to the right and you eat it with a spoon. You're easily convinced.

Why would I need a finer brush?

There's no subtlety or nuance about where the Republican party is today.

And this is why many Dem's turned their back on their "party" during midterms.

By Kevin Zeese

"Here are the answers to the questions the Democratic Party needs to be asking itself: People didn’t vote because the Democratic Party has not served the interests of their constituents. The Democrats are trying to serve two masters: big money — primarily from Wall Street and transnational corporations — and the people. The people want policies that big business opposes.

Unfortunately, all that the people are getting is empty rhetoric created through focus groups that sounds progressive, while the Democrat’s actions do the opposite. Wall Street and big business interests get policies that expand their already too extreme wealth which is corrupting the government. Voters are hip to the game that is being played and are choosing to drop out. They are forcing the Democrats to decide which side they are on: big money’s or the people’s.

As long as Democrats represent wealthy interests rather than the voters, they will never be a political party that can govern the country and get things done. The people will withhold their votes and actively oppose their policies.

The Democratic Party needs to know that Hillary Clinton, their front-runner for 2016, is on the wrong side. She is taking money personally and politically from Wall Street, Monsanto, weapons makers and other transnational business interests. She has taken huge speaking fees to enrich herself and the Clinton Foundation. While we would like to see a female president, her gender alone is insufficient to energize voters. Hillary cannot overcome her history and remake herself to win the presidency in 2016. The party would be foolish to coronate her."

Meh ...

... while I don't disagree that the Dems need to demonstrate that they are the party that will serve the people rather than the big-monied interests, the mid-term losses had far more to do with gerrymandering, the electoral map, and the fact that it was the sixth year of a Democrat President's term in office.

After all, they lost to Republicans - not exactly the most populist organization on the planet.
