I'm sure that millions of baby girls have died in China over the last several decades. Even the babies that end up in orphanages are often starved to death if they aren't adopted by age 2 or 3. The best hope for an abandoned Chinese baby is that she will be adopted by a foreigner.

What I don't understand is, if they abort or kill the female babies, how can they maintain their population if females are scarce?

I read a story about a 30-something girl that wasn't married. They are branded "leftover women" if they don't marry by age 30. Called that to their face. It sounds pretty cruel.

That's sad, because there is a shortage now of younger women of marrying age in China. The one child policy started in the early 80s, so the women who are over 30 were born right before or around the time that the policy started. But young men under the age of 30 are having a difficult time finding brides. Maybe there is a cultural issue about men marrying women who are older?
