The price of meat, eggs and fish rose hit an all time high in May - pricier than at any point since 1967 when the Consumer Price Index began tracking items.

Food costs jumped 0.5%, the largest increase since August 2011, as meat, poultry fish and eggs rose 1.4% and fruits and vegetables rose 1.1% according to the Labor Department's Consumer Price Index.

The priced have been rising for months, in part because of a drought in California, historically thin cattle herds and a virus in the pork population.

The rise in prices also affected other areas too with energy, housing, apparel and other costs among those increasing.

Economists, who had expected consumer prices to rise only 0.2 percent, said the increase suggested a separate inflation gauge watched by the Fed also pushed higher in May, although it would still fall short of the central bank's 2 percent target

'The index for meats, poultry, fish and eggs has risen 7.7 percent over the span [last year],' says the BLS.

'The index for food at home increased 0.7 percent, its largest increase since July 2011. Five of the six major grocery store food group indexes increased in May.

Contrary to popular belief, vegetarianism is not healthy.

they found that vegetarians did have lower BMI and alcohol consumption but had poorer overall health. Vegetarians had higher incidences of cancer, allergies, and mental health disorders, a higher need for health care, and poorer quality of life.

As a result, vegetarians take more medications than non-vegetarians
