Once in Afghanistan, Bergdahl like many of our soldiers, realized that we weren't in the business of helping Afghans, we were in the business of occupying that country and slaughtering Afghans in large numbers. Bergdahl didn't "adjust" to the role of bad guy. Instead of staying on through his deployment and coming home to suck a pistol -- like thousands of his fellow dis-illusioned comrades -- he deserted and may have defected.
We're pulling out of Afghanistan and when we do, without ongoing hostilities, there is no reason to keep Afghan prisoners-of-war imprisoned indefinitely at Guantanamo. When hostilities have ceased, they're going to be released, you can bank on it. So trading away the five alleged insurgent leaders now, instead of letting them all go in the next 24 months, doesn't have much meaning, does it?
The U.S. has two choices: Stay in Afghanistan and fight the Taliban for another decade, or end this un-winnable, non-productive and costly war.
What was far more important than Bergdahl's fate in this situation, was that the U.S. was able to SUCCESSFULLY NEGOTIATE SOMETHING WITH THE TALIBAN!
Ending America's doomed participation in Afghanistan is far more important than the immediate fate of Bergdahl or five Afghan terrorists.
On this one, Obama is right.
