2. Avoid Synthetic Fragrance

Look for cleaners, laundry detergents, and personal care products labeled “fragrance-free” Warning: “unscented” does not mean fragrance-free!
Discontinue use of air fresheners. Click here for tips to reduce odors around the home.

THE FACTS: Synthetic fragrance can be made up hundreds of chemicals, all of which are kept secret from consumers. Common fragrance chemicals include phthalates (reproductive and developmental harm) and synthetic musks (break down the body’s defenses against other toxic exposures, linked to increased risk of breast cancer).

3. Give Your Personal Care Products a Makeover

Read the label to avoid chemicals like parabens, sodium laureth sulfate, and oxybenzone.
Check the Skin Deep database at www.cosmeticsdatabase.com to find safer products.

The old trick to make a house smell good was to boil a mixture of vanilla extract. It is amazing.

My wife loves scents and fragrances and scented candles. All of these are poison to me. I can't allow her to burn candles or spray scents when I am in the house, because I am horribly affected by these.

In the past 10 years it just about kills me to be around anyone with perfume or aftershave on. Oust, febreeze laundry soap and etc. I shower daily with non allergenic soap but never wear any cologne, it's disgusting. I only go to work now when I am scheduled to be there and leave when my time is over. Some of the males and a couple females think they don't have to shower if they pour that shit all over them. Personally if some insurance person came to my house smelling like a french whore to sell me insurance I would show them the door. I have told a couple of guys I work with it is very offensive to the people they have appts with, anyway I was diagnosed with MCS a little over two years ago. Some of those chemical's lead to aml and other health conditions.

There has been a real move away from personal fragrances the last five years. I will be playing poker and an older person will sit down drenched in after shave.....I just want to leave the table. However, it can be equally unpleasant to have a larger person with hygiene issues sit next to you, and in those cases I usually get up and leave. I will put ban on and have not worn any aftershave in 10 years. My wife uses dove soap, and it works for me.

I use witch hazel as a skin toner. Makes a good aftershave, too. I had a terrible time with hay fever this year, tho. So much pollen...people cutting grass...and sometimes I'm bothered by the "sizing" they put in new clothes. I try to stay away from harsh cleaners. I like to use vinegar, baking soda, alcohol, and a natural cleanser called BonAmi for household chores.

If I wear perfume, I put it on long before I leave...that way it has time to dissipate, so it's not overwhelming.

It seems like we develop sensitivity to fragrances as we get older. I wonder why? I can barely tolerate even the smallest amount now.

Seaoat: What is the vanilla mixture you boil?
