"The first four-star general to command U.S. military operations in Africa is facing the possibility of being demoted after an investigation by the Pentagon inspector general found that Gen. William "Kip" Ward spent thousands of dollars on inappropriate travel expenses, according to several administration officials directly familiar with the case."

And woe be to a whistle blower who would dare report these actions

A four star gets loads of benefits--travel, etc, as it is. They have military Lear jets at their disposal for travel and they have large allowances. His behavior/spending must have been way, way out there.
If he's guilty of stealing gov money -and that's what it is --STEALING- if he was not authorized those expenses.... then he should face time in federal prison.

The Navy alone has fired more than 150 CO's over the last ten years for misconduct. As a retired Naval Officer I can't understand how the system has gotten so broken where people with obvious moral or character defects continue to be promoted.

Well, honestly--Military officers years ago got away with a lot of crap that officers today do not get away with. There was always those who abused their positions. They're just being caught and held accountable more often today. Unless they're a 4 star, I guess.

Back 30 years ago, when my husband was active duty, the married CO of my husband's sister squadron was carrying on an affair with a woman in San Diego. He actually ordered his junior officers that their wives should not travel to meet the ship in San Diego because he didn't want any of his officer's wives talking about his mistress in San Diego. His behavoir would not be tolerated in today's navy. In one sense, it's a good thing. These scumbags like that CO years ago should never command a squadron. But there have also been officers that were denied promotions or relieved of duty for events that they were not responsible for...so it's a two-edged sword.

But, I thought that whistle blowers were protected from retaliation.

Yeah, right. Razz

I wasn't a whistle blower, but if I was, I would make damn sure my complaint was anonymous. Since anonymous complaints seem to make it to the "round file", it would have to go to the media as well.

Look no further than 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue! Is this any different than any other government agancy taking freebies on the taxpayers dime?.... A lack of leadership!...The Sec of Defense and the Secretaries of all the branches of the services need to be tightened up...These are UP the chain of command infractions/crimes and how they went un-noticed is certainly part of the problem...This General is a disgrace and should be prosecuted accordingly just as ALL others should be....what did the media call it at Homeland Security.....Frat House mentality....Ole Janet should be the first to go there....
