I was watching Fox News this morning and one host or talking head said "100 million Americans are not working".
And it stunned me to hear that,  because that's close to 1/3 of the whole population.  And that 1/3 would include children and old people.   So if you take them out it means half the working age population isn't working.
Can that actually be true?

I kinda feel sorry for some out there whos husband leaves them and they have to raise children by themselves its not easy! Its been done but I don't think its easy ! well unless they get food stamps . But you have to consider rent , Renting a place its not cheap to rent , some rent out there is very high like $600 to $700 a month for nice places  Shocked

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) wants to change the way Americans think of welfare.
And to that end, she suggest during a House speech Wednesday, we should start thinking of welfare as a “transitional living fund.”
“Maybe the word welfare should be changed to something of a transitional living fund,” she said in a speech that praised the so-called “war on poverty” and government welfare programs. “For that is what it is — for people to be able to live.”
“(T)he safety net has to be something for all of us,” she added.

This is something Progressives excel at better than anyone in the world.

Socialism became left which became left wing which became Liberal which has become Progressive.

Whenever the real meaning of their terminology catches up with them, they change the name in the hopes the new term will be swallowed more easily.

Like my hero of far left progressivisim,  Al Gore who invented the internets, my heroine of far left progressivism is a very smart lady who woulda never thought we had a flag on Mars.  Obviously Sean Hannity made that up about her and covered up the fact that it was actually Bush who said it.

General welfare doesn't mean a handout to some.

No, but it is inclusive of the same under that general umbrella. I think there are abuses in any program, but overwhelmingly those who comment on the same are so removed from the conditions which necessitate welfare that they simply look at the exception and try to generalize the same as the rule. Corporate welfare or individual welfare have as a common denominator the belief that this country's general welfare will be better. Both should be reduced, but in the end it is a moral choice.

Sorry, not buying it.  The Preamble is stating that the new Constitution is now the law of the land, replacing the Articles of Confederation.  The Preamble refers, on a federal level - not state level,  to the rights and responsibilities of the People.

It is we the people establishing a union (federal level) to promote these things for the states... then goes on to enumerate those established federal powers. A state always could redistribute and form social entitlements. The way you are interpreting that preamble would give the federal govt carte blanche reach and the rest of the document would be moot. General means common and welfare means benefit... not taking from one to give to another.

But!... But!... I'm kinda likin' the idea of the government having brothels and demanding some workin' gals and guys to... administer to the mental and social health of poor males and females in need of some lovin'.

Perhaps the government can do like Muslim' countries do and have those gals and guys in prison work their crimes off... Say one day off their sentence for every ten guys or gals they service.
