I'll be damned.  I think that's the first photo I've seen that shows the Florida Theater sign (with the palm tree in it).

Check out the 3 wheel Cushman Scooter that the Meter Maids and the city police used to use. Also you can see the Arcade News stand. That was when the Black folks were upset and marching downtown. Things were tense for awhile.

from pensapedia...

The Crystal Ice Company was (also) a roadside ice store in the Eastside neighborhood built circa 1932 for Guy Spearman, who later founded the Spearman Brewing Company.
Hand signals, used for ordering, and prices set in relief on the building's exterior. Photo courtesy of Roadside Architecture.

Passing motorists would stop under the canopy and indicate to an attendant (using hand signals shown in relief on the building's exterior) how much ice they wanted.

The building (which still stands at 2024 North Davis Street) is notable for its design by Steven Fulgham featuring stucco "icicles" a polar bear sculpture on the roof. It is one of the only remaining examples of vernacular roadside commercial architecture in Pensacola and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 29, 1983.

That black box on the front of the Pensacola Ice House was a vending machine for Ice Picks.  10 cents.  you could tie chicken feather on them and made giant darts.  Many places used to sell live chicken, so feathers were easy to get.

Can you imagine a vending machine selling ice picks to anyone (including children) today?  lol

That reminds me.  I bought one of these at a yard sale a while back (it's a vintage WEN soldering "pistol").  Can you imagine selling this today either?  lol

Enjoyed the sites guys. I love the old Pensacola pictures.

Bob, the Florida theater was the only theater my brother and I could go to alone. Mom's cousin was the manager and he would come down the aisle with a flashlight several times to check on us during the movie. When the movie was over.....mom would be right out front waiting on us. First thing dad would ask when we got home was " were the kids ok"? Mom and dad were just a little over protective.

Maybe it will work on those left-handed cigars you smoke and maybe it won't.

A guy calls me who lives in Navy Point and says he has some metal Spearman signs...

I grew up in Navy Point (1965-1987) and wish I had known more about that.  Apparently, the Spearmans lived nearby and I never knew it.  My mom says she briefly dated a Spearman in high school (this would have been in the early to mid 1960's) and they used to sneak into the brewery and drink the "green" (as in "not yet conditioned") beer.

Anyway...

These days, I live in Los Angeles and home brew beer.  I'd love to get my hands on any of the old Spearman recipes.  I could try to recreate them and see what it tasted like "back in the day".

If anyone knows where to scare up some of those old recipes, let me know!!
