It was a stupid design from the start, but we have more urgent financial considerations. The days of "wannas" are long gone by.

A lot of towns grew up around the tracks and it's a really bad thing but now it's very expensive and the logistics of it makes Airport Blvds upgrade look easy....I lived in Bakersfield Ca. for a while it's the same BS..trains thundering around all night long...

Map is not correct. Track has already been removed in front of Stooderville, Rails do not connect all the way to the main yard near Pace Blvd.

When did you live in Bakersfield, Teo? I grew-up there. I have a brother who lives on Beech St., and my parents are buried in Union Cemetery, along with a whole bunch of other family elders.

Yeah, this makes a LOT of sense..... (not).

Use RESTORE $$ to move the tracks so a bunch of hungry developers can then build houses for rich people where the tracks once were. Net impact on Escambia Bay: more pollution. I could only go for this if the property was then used as a green-space or for a public use.

I lived there for a few months in 2005 then moved to Kernville because I like peace and quiet. Bakersfield is a nice town though. Not your typical California yuppieville    It's much more like Pensacola.  Guess that's why Californians talk it down all the time.

My opinion is that riding in a Hummer without seat belts and giving one on a first online date are dangerous behaviors, but do provide thrills despite the low gas mileage.

I stand corrected.  The map does show they have removed the track from the port west bound. It picks up again a little after Clubs street but it blocked with a dead head at E st.  The lumber/truss company may still have rail service but it is lightly used.  Downtown people do not like trains.

Days Inn Pensacola
Hotel owner trying to get problem solved: by Carlton Proctor PNJ:

The sound and the fury, DIB may be backing off back-in parking on Palafox, and a retail hot spot.
An earful

Late-night train noise is an issue that’s been around for decades in Pensacola, and for decades nothing’s been done to rectify the problem.

Every time the City of Pensacola takes a look at the issue, the conclusion is the same: It is too expensive to retrofit lights and gates at the streets that cross the tracks.

But that’s not stopping hotel owner Ajit Patel from at least trying.

Owner of the Days Inn at Cervantes and Palafox streets, which backs up to the CSX tracks, Patel’s been hearing complaints from his guests for years about being awakened at night by train horns.

Tired of getting an earful from customers, Patel has been exchanging emails with City Administrator Bill Reynolds about the problem and what it would take to establish a “quiet zone” in the city limits.

The City of Mobile recently spent about $400,000 to install railroad quiet zones along six downtown intersections, and hotel owners seem pleased with the result.

But to solve the problem in downtown Pensacola would cost more than $2 million.

In an email sent to Patel last week, Reynolds said he broached the noise issue recently with council members.

Reynolds’ email also said a Federal Housing Insurance representative who examined the crossings four years ago said there were no other options — including insurance indemnification — than retrofitting the crossings with advanced gates and lights.

“That being said, we are looking at having another estimate at the beginning of the year (2013),” Reynolds wrote in his email to Patel.

I was at my son's swim team banquet in Heritage Hall (corner of Government and Tarragona) on Tuesday evening and was surprised to see a train traveling north on Tarragona right outside the window.

Must have been a special train to pick up the cash from the Fish House and Stooderville.

But you know, Z, that the powers-that-be in Pensacola will have no problem lying to the public about the use of the land after the tracks are removed.

Look at what happened at the Maritime Park.

At this point, I wouldn't believe a thing the city says. They lied once, and they will do so again to get what they want, which is a slew of new corporate buildings, condos and businesses on public land.

Unless you live in the forest, off the land, you live in a house or apartment built by a "hungry developer". If the public wants the land, let them buy the property.
