I am going to travel to the horseshoe in Hammond Indiana over the next two weeks and play in a world series braclet hold em tournament. It was on my bucket list to play in the world series next summer, but I was not feeling good. I feel pretty good and think I can handle a four day tournament.

Probably get busted the first day.

I have good vibes. I say you will make it to day 3. A pair of jacks will be a turning point in the game. good Luck(or skill)

No it is skill, but when you play in a bracelet tournament you are playing against professionals. I am a recreational player who has won quite a few Casino tournaments. I have seats in two year end tournaments of champions, but the level of play is like comparing minor league to major league. I have a very good batting average in the minors. Will I be able to hit the curve in the majors......I will have to tighten my game.

It is the journey, having the nerve to play against the very best.  You know you might get crushed, but it the only way to learn.  You never get much better doing anything against the small fry.  It is rough on the Ego but the best leaning experiences is when some totally out preforms you. If it is skill, then you can learn and improve.  See ya on TV one day. Dont scrach your nose every time you get a pair of aces as your hole cards.

Good luck asshole.

Luck has very little to do with it......I would need luck to beat pros, but in poker when you see the same faces in the top 50 in tournaments, luck is really secondary to skill levels.

Luck is when a duece comes up on the river and gives you the ace high flush but gives somebody else a full house because he had pocket dueces and went all in pre flop and you called with your pocket aces..

An Amazing venue at Horseshoe Hammond Indiana.  I traveled through the south side of Chicago and took the Chicago Skyway through the heart of rust belt factories long since converted to smaller operations from the boom steel mills.  The view from the casino is stunning as it overlooks the largest marina I have seen.  Figure 100 fold the pier at the end of palafox.  The view of the Chicago skyline over the lake is spectacular.

There are about 200 tables set up in a large convention type hall.  It is an A/B structure this weekend and next.  This means you play Thursday in the A portion, and if you survive you play in the final tournament all day Saturday when they combine you with the B winners Friday.  Their regular cash game poker room is as large as any I have seen and there is no wait to get on a table as you are immediately seated.   I played thursday so I could find the place, and pre register because there are going to be 4k people lining up to register Thursday morning.  I tried to go to sleep early because there is a reason that you do not see older poker players making it to the final tables.  It is a young persons game as it requires stamina and being alert for 12-16 hours.   Now I am awake in anticipation.  By playing in the A division, if I am lucky and advance I get to rest on Friday.  In any regard the wealth sitting in that harbor is incredible, and the lakefront breathtaking.

IF you play at the dog track, maybe we'll be at the same table one night..  The $50 buy in's are fun and not serious money, but more of just a night having fun playing a little poker..

I played there two weeks ago. I always have fun, and find that the Pensacola players are as good as any I see in the country. It was a promotion night so I got two quads, two free hats and two hundred bucks. I never play Omaha high/low because it is a 10/20 game where I normally play, but at the track I played it all night for 2/5. So even with winning 200 bucks promotion, I lost 200, or I would have been a 400 buck loser. I normally play only no limit texas hold em.......but heck the learning curve with Omaha can get expensive where I play, so the 200 I lost was a bargain.

Again, some very good retired military poker players, and some of the best damn women players I have seen.

I won one there in Aug and lost in the monthly winners tourney mainly because of my attitude of not caring and a few of the typical idiot raisers..  2 weeks ago I was one of the winners who split after we all agreed to split the pot and go home..  I somehow managed to finish 2nd after being all in 5 times because of antis and blinds, and lucky enough to win and stay in the game..  I lasted thru 2 dealers without winning a hand or calling a flop..  It was a night of fold fold fold..  I won the last two hands before a break and finished 2nd with 46,000 out of the 6-7 of us left and we agreed to pay the leader 1st place money and split the rest..
I agree about a few of the retired militarhy players, but I'm also retired Navy and played friendly money games with dad, my brother, and a few friends and relatives for 10 years or so before I joined in 71..

It sounds like you are playing a disciplined and tight game.....I do not even know the meaning of tight. I am a dangerous poker player, and not necessarily good. I would rather blow my brains out than fold every hand through two dealers, and that is exactly why I will never advance my game to the next level.

That web site I posted on the first page holds most of the young guns and provides an insite into their game.

It might seem reckless... but there is sound math to the madness. I can play many diff styles depending on the table.

btw... I'll be in chicago too... but playing a tennis tourn.

I can play very tight or very reckless, depending on my mood..  Like you, having pocket aces is the hand that kills me more than anything else..  I hate being beat on the river by a small set... grrrrrrrrrrrr

Good Luck SeaOat.. I look forward to sitting at a table with you...

Just shy of 1,200 people played in the world series circuit event on Thursday. The top 120 people advance to the finals on Saturday. I made it to 135, and made my first and only mistake of the tournament and bluffed a queen/six. A pair of threes beat me. 11 hours of tournament play and to miss the cut off by less than a half hour of folding was borderline insane.

I have to make a decision before next thursday to enter another Circuit event. It is just that of the 135 people left when I got up, only about 10 were over 60 years of age. It is a real grind, and the older participants cannot keep up with the young guns.
