A brand-new U.S. military headquarters in Afghanistan. And nobody to use it.

Our government purchasing system and priorities are so screwed up it's amazing anything useful is ever accomplished. This is waste on a grand scale - even for the totally broken procurement system.

"The U.S. military has erected a 64,000-square-foot headquarters building on the dusty moonscape of southwestern Afghanistan that comes with all the tools to wage a modern war. A vast operations center with tiered seating. A briefing theater. Spacious offices. Fancy chairs. Powerful air conditioning.

Everything, that is, except troops.

The windowless, two-story structure, which is larger than a football field, was completed this year at a cost of $34 million. But the military has no plans to ever use it. Commanders in the area, who insisted three years ago that they did not need the building, now are in the process of withdrawing forces and see no reason to move into the new facility."

Well they were brave enough to build a few in Washington D.C. - Afghanistan would be a piece of cake after that.

Maybe not.

The wise far left Progressives on the Washington Council have voted to require mandate requiring Wal-Mart to pay 50% more than the Washington D.C. minimum wage.  Something over $12.25 minimum per hour.

The stores would have been in very low income areas where jobs and better prices are desperately needed.

EXEMPTED are companies as large as Wal-Mart IF they are Union shops. Bottom line is the law applies ONLY to Wal-Mart and no other company in Washington.

Now Wal-Mart halted plans for the other three and is considering pulling out on the three under construction.

And Progressives can't figure out why there are no jobs....

Wal-Mart operates on a razor thin margin, something like this make the stores unprofitable.

Also, Afghanistan cannot afford to buy the behemoth, plus it is wired for 110 volts instead of the 220 used in Afghanistan.  Supposedly it would cost more than the building to retrofit the building.

We also spent $68 million for a five year lease on a property in Northern Afghanistan which was determined to not be secure enough to be used so it is sitting vacant.

I see this whole waste of money thing as being a prime example of corporate interests sucking money from the taxpayers. The system is just rigged apparently in favor of such activity.

The sequester comes along and cuts services to everyday things in this country as a way of being in everyones face about how great Congress has been to save money by laying people off work without pay for one day a week and the jerks who built an unneeded multi million dollar facility in a stone-age country walk away with profits...and then we tear it down or let them keep goats in it or whatever.

The real problem is that now no one thinks this was a good idea. Someone put the wording in a bill that allows this sort of snafu to go on. Sadly, the way things are set up now there is not enough courage in Congress to correct the situation most likely because the people who like it also finance most of Congress.

It's too pitiful to be funny but apparently the CinC BHO isn't aware of this either (is there ANYTHING he knows about now that his campaigning days for himself are over):

"White House Press Secretary Jay Carney apparently isn't reading his hometown paper.
The Washington Post carried a fairly explosive story on Wednesday about a $34 million military headquarters in southwestern Afghanistan that probably will never be used by U.S. forces. A scathing inspector general letter was also released Wednesday morning on the war-zone boondoggle."

Of course the military/industrial complex profited from constructing it. That's all they care about. You people didn't honestly believe there was ever any need for a sensible reason to build this did you? Jesus are ya'll naive.

As usual the war profiteers make money and everyone else on the planet suffers. It was obvious that the regulations or the law was written to guarantee the profits for the industrialists. Ayn Rand strikes again?

The American people are like Charlie Brown and the football except even Charlie seems to vaguely remember that the last time Lucy held the ball things didn't go very well for him. We don't seem to even remember the LAST time we were taken to the cleaners in the name of standing up for our national interest. It is just sickening but if we are this stupid we may not deserve better? People get the government they deserve, isn't that what they say?

Remember the Maine!!

Very subtle...the article names only the President, Chuck Hagel, who only recently assumed office, and those generals who tried to stop the boondoggle, but nowhere is a mention of WHO AUTHORIZED this project.

PLEASE share with us the percentage of our total spending makes up the Sequester.

As you well know, Congress was willing to pass a bill which would have allowed agencies to cut back in areas which would not have inflicted as much pain on the public.

For instance, with the Secret Service, money could have been shifted so as to have kept the White House open for tourists. Instead, President Barack Hussein Obama promised to Veto such a bill choosing instead to inflict as much pain as possible on the citizens.

Don't forget to post that percentage for us, we're waiting with baited breath. It must be huge!

Think the point is/was that no one knows nothing...If the administration in charge gets the positive credit then when things of this nature are found then they too are responsible for the negatives...

Wal Mart tried to build three stores in the DC Area....the local politicians demanded that Wal Mart pay $12.50 minimum wage to the employees of those stores when the minimum wage is $8.50.  No other store has had such conditions placed on their businesses only Wal Mart....These stores would have had an impact of approx 2000 jobs for construction and eventually the running of the stores...
