WMD. IRS. Benghazi. AP Reporter's phone numbers.

Think about it -- the whole situation boils down to a matter of trust. If you trust the government, then let them continue invading your privacy.

As for myself, I wouldn't trust the current administration, the Pentagon, the CIA, the FBI or the NSA any further than I can throw my van.

It's good to know your enemies!!

What phone info do you think they have, and how do you think they could use it against me?

I'm not worried. I have nothing to hide.
I don't even j-walk. If I was a terrorist, I might be worried. Are you worried?

Curious....

MANY times Wordslinger has vehemently expressed his hatred of America, the most successful economic system in the World and virtually any and all of our leaders.

On the other hand, Wordslinger has expressed his affection for forms of government which afford NO Freedom or Liberty. He has repeatedly expressed his affection for World leaders who have murdered millions of their own citizens.

Seems to be an angry with the world and his own bad choices in life. Sorry life has dealt you such a bad hand.

As to the other womb to tomb lovers here....

Benjamin Franklin
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

I am just amazed that people are understanding now this has been going on.......we are going on almost 20 years of these types of data collection. My first question is .......do you trust software providers who have left backdoors? Do you not realize that most cell calls can be intercepted by anybody? Do you realize how vulnerable an email is, or how utterly insane a facebook account is? So where is the expectation of privacy as these forms of communication have gone from hard wire to wireless, from mail to email.........we have gone from almost the horse and buggy age to the jet age on the information highway, and your worry is about the government? We are being tracked commercially, we are being tracked by all kinds of people and now throw in the government........so may I ask......what is new since 2000?

The fourth amendment has been so diluted since the drug war......it is time for a retrenchment back to the essentials of our founding fathers......but there is a lot more invasion of privacy than the government.....a great deal more.

I can see you're some kind of patriot ... What you're communicating is that the government should be allowed to surveil whatever, whoever, however they want -- and do so with the entire program kept secret from all of us.

I guess your family fought on the English side during the Revolutionary War ...

And the members/leaders of Tea Party...Conservative....Patriot Groups weren't worried either...Read posts here that complain about law enforcement profiling based on race but seem to be content on other types of profiling...

First, let me say that our security apparatus has become far too pervasive, much of what is now legal should be illegal, and the entire process should be far more transparent.

That having been said, let's take a deep breath and recognize what has happened for what it actually is.

There were no wiretaps.

The contents of emails and text messages were not examined.

These were basic phone logs.

An almost unfathomably massive list of phone numbers and where communications originated and were received.

That's it.

They are not looking to see if you're looking at porn on your smart phone at work, or skimming money off the top from your business partner, or laying the wood to the soccer mom down the street.

The NSA is pouring this metadata into super-computers and looking for patterns.

Namely, patterns involving countries and regions that are known to be hostile to our interests.

I think this is a very healthy debate, and one that's long overdue, but let's be real about the parameters of that debate.

What is being done is one big google search engine........the danger is not in the innocuous nature of the gross amount of data, but the programs which can put that data in context.

Now as to Wordslinger questioning my patriotism, well I can only answer that I have been a staunch defender of the fourth amendment, and certainly if he has been on these forums for eight years he has seen my arguments. However, what is the modern expectation of privacy? Is it distinguishable from a founding father being safe in their home from search and seizure of papers in that home.......If I put up a billboard with my personal information on it, is there an expectation of privacy? Is there an expectation of privacy when we go to a specific place and another can determine the same. Or that we have a phone line in our home.........if the content is not the focus, rather the context, it would normally be an innocuous fact that I have a telephone, that I went to Walmart on Saturday, or that I have an email account. There is probably on a sliding scale of expectation of privacy very little protection that I have a phone and phone number. However, with the powerful tools of the search engine can the collection of the data which may not have a privacy expectation collectively garner protection when the government is able to use these powerful tools. Unlike Mr. W, I am not so quick to define the privacy expectation and the limits of the fourth amendment. Using the logic that Mr. W has put forth, one could carry his argument that I need a search warrant to look up a phone number in a phone book.....an absurd proposition on its face, but much of this data is exactly that argument, however it is the configuration of the data and the context which these new tools bring which is troubling.....not as easy as some now try to make it.

OK, well I pretty much agree with Sal. So obviously I'm going to have to think about it some more. Shocked

I will just say...I think if someone with some power had it in for you, some of this could be some scary stuff. So in that sense, it does concern me. But privacy? There is really no such thing anymore. But also I think that there is no way that even the bloated federal government has enough employees to listen and look through the details of all of this communication. I do not think that anyone in the government is that interested in my emails and phone conversations.

“Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended; its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force, of the people. The same malignant aspect in republicanism may be traced in the inequality of fortunes, and the opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war, and in the degeneracy of manners and of morals engendered by both. No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.

These truths are well-established. They are read in every page which records the progression from a less arbitrary to a more arbitrary government, or the transition from a popular government to an aristocracy or a monarchy." - James Madison 1795

Since 9/11, seventeen million square feet of office space has been acquired in Washington, DC alone for classified intelligence analysis.

Thanks to this explosion, suburban Washington, DC is now home to six of the ten wealthiest counties in America.

Another humongous data-mining facility is being completed in Utah.

Today, I read that Booz Allen Hamilton is signing a new contract with the Defense Department worth $5.6 billion for top-secret intelligence analysis.

We've gone complete insane.

I'm not concerned about them using my phone information against me because I'm not doing anything illegal. There hasn't been any privacy in phone records for years though, so I don't think it's such a big thing. The Bush administration did it too and it goes all the way back to when J Edgar Hoover was around. It's just a "pile on" scandal along with all the others. They're trying to make a mountain out of a bunch of molehills.

Oh for gods sake now you sound like one of those fence sitters who doesn't like the democrats or the republicans either one. You need to take sides and realize the democrats will save us. All we have to do is vote in more democrats and vote out more republicans and our problems will be solved.

And if that don't do it for you then get on the other side like markle and the poster from iowa and see how many times you can write the word "liberal" in each post.
But choose one or the other goddamnit.

Say this real fast. Peter Piper liberally liberalized a liberal peck of progressive pickles.
