US warship collides with tanker near Singapore; 10 missing

By ANNABELLE LIANG
From Associated Press
August 20, 2017 11:50 PM EST

SINGAPORE (AP) — Ten U.S. sailors are missing after the USS John S. McCain collided with a tanker early Monday east of Singapore, the second accident involving a ship from the Navy's 7th Fleet in the Pacific in two months.

The Navy said five sailors were hurt in the collision between the guided-missile destroyer and the 183-meter (600-foot) Alnic MC, an oil and chemical tanker. Four of them were evacuated by a Singaporean navy helicopter to a hospital in the city-state for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, and one did not require further medical attention.

The McCain had been heading to Singapore on a routine port visit after conducting a sensitive freedom of navigation operation last week by sailing near one of China's man-made islands in the South China Sea.

The destroyer was damaged on its port side aft, or left rear, from the collision that happened at 5:24 a.m., the Navy's 7th Fleet said, but was heading to port under its own power. The Singapore government said no crew were injured on the Liberian-flagged Alnic, which sustained damage to a compartment at the front of the ship some 7 meters (23 feet) above its waterline.

Singapore sent tugboats and naval and coast guard vessels for the search and rescue effort. Malaysia's navy chief Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin tweeted that two ships as well as aircraft from its navy and air force were helping with the search for the missing sailors. He tweeted a photo of the McCain that showed a gaping hole in its side near the waterline. The Navy said Osprey aircraft and Seahawk helicopters from the USS America were assisting in the search.

There was no immediate explanation for the collision and the Navy said an investigation would be conducted. Singapore, at the southernmost tip of the Malay Peninsula, is one of the world's busiest ports and a U.S. ally, with its naval base regularly visited by American warships.

The collision was the second involving a ship from the Navy's 7th Fleet in the Pacific in two months. Seven sailors died in June when the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship hit each other in waters off Japan.

The Fitzgerald's captain was relieved of command and other sailors were being punished after the Navy found poor seamanship and flaws in keeping watch contributed to the collision, the Navy announced last week. An investigation into how and why the Fitzgerald collided with the other ship was not finished, but enough details were known to take those actions, the Navy said.

President Donald Trump has expressed concern for the McCain's crew.

Trump returned to Washington on Sunday night from his New Jersey golf club. When reporters shouted questions to him about the McCain, he responded, "That's too bad."

About two hours later, Trump tweeted that "thoughts and prayers" are with the McCain's sailors as search and rescue efforts continue.

The 154-meter (505 foot) McCain, named after U.S. Sen. John McCain's father and grandfather who were both U.S. admirals, is based at the 7th Fleet's homeport of Yokosuka, Japan. It was commissioned in 1994 and has a crew of 23 officers, 24 chief petty officers and 291 enlisted sailors, according the Navy's website.

McCain said on Twitter that he and his wife Cindy are "keeping America's sailors aboard the USS John S McCain in our prayers tonight — appreciate the work of search & rescue crews."

It makes you wonder if our routes of travel have been compromised and ships are being targeted purposely. That's two less ships that can deploy in what is a growing area of competition by recognized Great Powers. America has been an arbiter of peace as far back as the Hay Treaty which created a compromise on foreign trade in China and prevented a possible European conflict over it.

Sure, asshole. A giant container ship and a chemical/oil tanker -- both of which require a mile or more of travel to execute a 90 turn purposefully targeted two of our fastest and most agile missile destroyers.
Where exactly were you educated son?

I'm concerned that the military has become just another bloated govt agency. A much leaner tech savvy trained force would serve WtP (we the people) better.  Unless other countries want to pay for our defense... we pull out.  However... I do think that we should exercise in international waters.

The Trump-man insists we have to spend trillions more for new ships, planes, rockets and tanks, etc. But let's face it, not a single general or admiral now on duty has ever won a war. And, equipped with the most modern and sophisticated navigational, sonar and radar systems, two of our best missile destroyers have been rammed by giant merchant ships.

We don't need to spend more on equipment for our current mercenary military forces. We need to start removing officers who obviously can't do their jobs!!

It is just continuing confirmation of what I have preached for a decade. We are the biggest threat to world peace. We have MIC making record profits as they seek another hot war somewhere, and as we have fully transitioned from a citizens army of WWII to a Roman mercenary army with the same results as what happened to Rome as the last fifty years has seen such a decline that our military is one big paper tiger who was just given another forty billion dollar raise a year to project power where we have no moral business being.

We have been filling the military since the end of the Viet Nam war with kids who have no options and need to snuggle up to the government welfare program for MIC. We need to drastically cut our military, change our military strategy back to defense, and stop terrorizing the world with people who cannot even operate a ship as weapon systems get fewer and more complex, we are in serious trouble as a nation, and when patriots argue the same they are told because they never were a mercenary they lose their right to be an American citizen. The perversion of these times was unthinkable in 1945 when citizen soldiers were returning from war.

It would be hazarding a guess but it looks like (in this case) the tanker was supposed to give way to the can but for some reason didn't, unless of course the can was overtaking the tanker on its starboard side and turned left in front of the tanker. No excuse in either scenario for the Navy crew to let their ship get hit if they were maintaining a proper watch. In the case of the Fitzgerald it was obviously their fault.

What you are seeing results from high op-tempos with too little time off for overworked crews - overtasked ships inevitably have accidents. Another problem is crew turnover - this leads to inexperienced people on watch and in an area like this ship was in that is a recipe for disaster.

The surface Navy has always had a junior officer retention problem and with the way the Navy is pushing them into levels of responsibility they can't possibly be ready for they are going to make serious mistakes.

You know what they say though, in the military when the budget is tight the first thing to get cut is training. And that's what is lacking in these cases.

Everytime we strip the military to defensive capabilities only, we end up in world wars. Read your history again. Europe has enjoyed its longest time of peace due to our influence and presence. Their soft underbelly more dangerous than each other has been liberal immigration policies which will soon overwhelm the indigenous populations of European descent. They've coddled immigrants who complain about where they came from, yet want to make their host nations just like their departure locations. Bombings and other forms of terrorism are now commonplace. It'll be the same here soon if liberals ever get control of the government again.

Right. Obviously you think leaving the government in the hands of a bigoted tyrant like the Pussy Grabber will bring us security and happiness. Sure it will .... Not.

I believe these are premeditated attacks. The rest of the world sees a leadership vacuum in the US. BTW, the commander of the McCain and 2 other officers have been fired.

Eight years of Obama has emboldened our enemies. Attacks like this and Iran taking our SWCC teams hostages in his last term made us a joke in the eyes of the world. trump will have to resort to some harsh tactics to get the attention of the enemies who crossed the red lines Obama set as boundaries and then never enforced. It will take decisive military action.

Trump spent years talking about our need to vacate Afghanistan. So now we're going to up our ante and stay. Is this the "decisive military action" you're whining about?

Unlike your master Obama, Trump plans to eradicate the terror network. You can get on board or you can keep whining but if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem. He called out Pakistan to who's been harboring Al Qaeda and the Haqqani network. If it was OK for your master Obama to go in the Pakistan to get Osama then it shouldn't be a problem with you if we go ahead and take out the rest of the terrorists using Pakistan is a safe haven . Trump is already 8 miles ahead of Obama because at least he can say the words "Islamic terrorism." You can never address a problem until you actually define it .

Among the many misconceptions and the inherent stupidity of your partisan rants, is the whacko assertion that I adored Obama's record of fighting Islamic terrorism. Equally confused is your statement placing confidence in another Trump promise -- this one "to eradicate the terror network." Yeah, sure. Same as Alexander the Great, the Russians ...etc. etc. etc. How is it possible to have confidence in anything the current President promises after his inability to enact legislation on healthcare, taxation, infrastructure, etc.? The Wall? The Muslim ban? Helping the middle class? Your faith in the Pussy Grabber with the dead rat on his head makes just as much sense as all your hero's tweets.
