An interview with Nancy MacLean, author of DEMOCRACY IN CHAINS...The Deep History of the Radical Right's Stealth Plan for America

"Many individuals who follow politics and journalists think that the right-wing playbook began with the Koch brothers. However, in her groundbreaking book, Nancy MacLean traces their political strategy to a Southern economist who created the foundation for today's libertarian oligarchy in the 1950s.

Mark Karlin: Can you summarize the importance of James McGill Buchanan to the development of the modern extreme right wing in the United States?

Nancy MacLean: The modern extreme right wing I'm talking about, just to be clear, is the libertarian movement that now sails under the Republican flag, particularly but not only the Freedom Caucus, yet goes back to the 1950s in both parties. President Eisenhower called them "stupid" and fashioned his approach -- calling it modern Republicanism -- as an antidote to them. Goldwater was their first presidential candidate. He bombed. Reagan, they believed, was going to enact their agenda. He didn't. But beginning in the early 2000s, they became a force to be reckoned with. What had changed? The discovery by their chief funder, Charles Koch, of the approach developed by James McGill Buchanan for how to take apart the liberal state..."

The post civil war analysis is simple. The federal government freed the slaves and government was the enemy. If you blow up the federal government, you can openly put people of color back into their place. What you call the various factions, libertarians, alt right, or Dixiecrats the central tenet is all federal government is bad. It really is that simple. The charade that blowing up the ACA is about getting lower premiums for citizens is contradicted by the facts. It is all about blowing up government in every regard.

The reason people buy into this ideology is that they're constantly being mislead by the lies of Fox, Limbaugh, extremist websites, and right-wing radio. All of these appeal to the basest of human instincts. This is also why Herr Drumpf is still around...he's feeding the frenzy and keeping the focus on him, or trying to, while the rats try to destroy every safety net. Most US citizens are one paycheck away from financial ruin.

Funny, the left wing MSM outnumbers the right wing (non fake news) sites 100-1, yet America doesn't buy your lies.

What lies. The confederacy wanted to destroy the union of the United States of America. They lost. Those same states produced De Jure Jim Crow laws and fought the federal government's intrusions that separate and equal are not legal, and folks attacked the federal government. They flocked over to the Republican Party and continue to attack the federal government. Show me the lies.

Abraham Lincoln called and he wants his Civil War politics back.

Yep, you lost the civil war. You lost your white privilege to abuse and enslave others. So you are constantly angry because you are only left with your god given talent.......and obviously that has not worked out real well, so you need a scapegoat.

Sorry, we're only allowed one lame, unoriginal "______________ called and want their ___________ back" joke per day, and you've already exceeded your quota. May I suggest a "what has two thumbs and _____________? This guy!" or perhaps a "Donald Trump could cure cancer and Dems would say he was putting doctors out of work." Maybe something in a "...and by ____ I mean ______" would still seem clever to you? Or maybe you could wait for somebody to rant about something and say, "Tell us how you really feel!"

I realize you're an unoriginal, uncreative person, but there's plenty of cliched witticisms-that-sounded-good-when-you-heard-somebody-else-say-them that you could steal and reheat without using the same ones over and over on the same day.

Just trying to be helpful! Smile

ACA vs Obama Care. Funny how people hated Obama Care but loved the provisions of the ACA. That's how uninformed and brainwashed they were. Once the right wing pushed ahead with their "promise" to repeal and replace, people SUDDENLY noticed that one thing at least that the federal government had created had actually been beneficial to them personally. Suddenly all the cherry picked statistics about high premiums and deductibles were set aside one they realized that their life-saving treatment was going to evaporate.

Sometimes the government is the solution. It is not always the problem, as the Freedom Caucus would have us believe. Now most people want the R's and D's to work together, put their big boy pants on and come up with some changes that will improve the ACA rather than to ditch it altogether.
