Sadness over the following pales in comparison to the suffering some of our forum members are undergoing, but it's sadness nonetheless:

On Saturday evening 7/2 the final episode of "Prairie Home Companion" as we know it -- that is, featuring host Garrison Keillor and his Lake Wobegon stories -- will air after having been recorded 7/1 before a very lucky live audience at the Hollywood Bowl in LA.

Quoting from a news story linked from my ISP's home page:


....writer and humorist Garrison Keillor hosts his final episode of the old-style variety show "A Prairie Home Companion" after 42 years on public radio.

Keillor's farewell will include "Companion's" best-known segment, "News From Lake Wobegon," folksy reports from a fictional town where "all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average."

"Companion" attracts three million listeners in the U.S., many more counting its Armed Forces Radio audiences worldwide. Keillor's final show airs Saturday night.

Wobegon leaves the show with Keillor, but the 73-year-old will keep it alive onstage, and he's working on a "Wobegon" screenplay.

"Companion" returns in October with new host Chris Thile.


Folks, Thile has guest-hosted the program a couple of times in the recent past, and personally I have to believe he will be nowhere near the draw.  Just no comparison whatsoever -- as if anyone could replace Garrison Keillor.

It's all a little depressing, even though, as my husband reminds me, Garrison has a right to retire just like everybody else.

I know, but......      

Doubtless I'll join countless others shedding a tear Saturday night at the passing of this precious piece of Americana, while wishing Garrison Keillor all the best in his future endeavors.

Thanks for posting this Linda. It's been a long time since I listened every week (I doubt he's still making Jesse Ventura jokes) but Lake Wobegon was always a sweet place to revisit. I doubt it will go over without the soft spoken Keillor. It will most likely end up the same as Buddy Hackett's and later Bill Cosby's attempts to match the success that Groucho had with You Bet Your Life, it's Keillor's baby. I will never pour ketchup with it's natural mellowing agents on my powdermilk biscuits that give shy people the strength to get up and do what needs to be done again, without a sigh of remorse. Sad indeed.

In case you aren't aware, you can watch live streaming video of the show tonight and if you've never seen it, it's interesting to watch the actors perform. Especially Fred Newman.

This one especially goes out to RealLindaL. It was the highlight of last night's show for me. I fell in love with this song when I first heard the Everlys do it 1960.

Ohhhh, thank you, Bob.  Sorry I didn't pick up on this earlier.   I, too, was truly moved and transported to my youth, hearing that number done so beautifully last night.   Really, really nice that you captured it for replay here, and thanks for sending it out to me.  You made my day.

Glad you enjoy them. I would listen every Sunday morning with someone very near and dear to me. Nice to find someone else that enjoyed listening to the show.

Thanks Hallmark, for more iconic clips.  Another fan!  Yay!

Does anyone know if these clips will endure on this thread for quite a while?  I'd love to come back and re-visit them from time to time.

I'm still hoping they'll replay some good old shows weekly until the new guy takes over in October.  I guess we'll find out this evening.  Yeah, I could look at the schedule but I'd rather be surprised -- hopefully pleasantly.  Smile

OK, DUH, good idea as far as occasional excerpts like these go. But I still want entire shows on my radio Saturday evenings, and NOT with the new guy. We'll see what happens later.
