I have been a lifelong Republican. Both my parents were lifelong Republicans before me. I was proud of my party. It represented self-reliance and freedom. To paraphrase the national anthem, the party of “the free and the brave.”
In the present election, on the other hand, fear and intolerance predominate. Surveys indicate that more than two-thirds of Republicans would refuse to allow anyone into this country who practices the Muslim religion. The leading candidate for the party’s presidential nomination advocates the use by our government of tortures much, much worse than waterboarding. He promises huge national greatness without illuminating how this will be achieved — other than by making vague deals and keeping “undesirable” people out of our country. Truly, this is a platform more suited to the Fascist party than to my Republican party.
With very few exceptions, I have voted for every Republican on the ballot in every election since 1958. I do not know how I will vote in my remaining elections. I do know, however, that I will never vote for Donald Trump.
